A little-known Japanese and a 37-year-old mother from New Zealand took the men's and women's titles in the 30th
edition. Crumpton became the first female repeat winner in over 20 years, having previously won in 2003.
Three-time Sydney Marathon winner Julius Maritim and fellow Kenyan Joel Kiplimo Kemboi could not contain the challenge
of Kazuo Ietani, who recorded his first win in six marathon attempts. Of her win, Crumpton remarked "I'll definitely
be back to the Gold Coast. It was my third marathon here – it's nice to win again."
Earlier in the day Queensland's Michael Shelley ran the race of his life to win the Asics Half Marathon. As supposed
pacesetter in the race for Beijing-bound Lee Troop and three-time Gold Coast 10km winner (2004, 2006 and 2007), he ran a
perfectly timed race in his debut at the distance. And while Shelley was justifiably elated with his win, Troop said
"I dug deep but he ran unbelievably well. Physically I'm fine, mentally I'm angry."
There were a record 21,001 entries from 29 countries and every Australian state and territory among all events, and
just short of 4000 runners in the marathon. The international contingent reached almost 2500 with 1839 runners and walkers
from Japan. A 47% increase in Japanese runners shows the enormous potential of the Gold Coast as a sports tourism
destination and is something that will be further developed in the future.

7-10 JULY 2008: 100km OF THE NAMIB DESERT, NAMIBIA
Stage 1: 7 July
The race started one hour before sunset to give runners the opportunity to run with the beautiful colours of the
African sunset. The varius kinds of terrain and the varying light up and down hill gave good definition to the route.
Great efforts and a fast rhythm allowed the 34 runners to enjoy this leg. A hard battle at the head of the race took
place between the veteran Massimo Russo and Matio Villa and Massimil Ferrari. Among the women the Californian Susan
Nowell won the leg from Rita Serra.

After 20km four runners emerged at the head of the race and they arrived at the finish line with just a few seconds
between them: Ferrari, Russo and Rossi. Susan Nowell again led the way in the women's race.
Annamaria Malpighi, in her first marathon experience, forwent a better position in order to await her father Marcello
and cross the finish line hand in hand with him. The entire group appreciated this great moment of joy and love.

19 JULY 2008: GREAT TIBETAN MARATHON, INDIA
108 runners kicked up the dust on the old road between Hemis and Spituk monasteries, with 46 in the full marathon,
and the remainder spread among the half marathon, 10km and 5km distances, writes Lars Fyhr.
The race started with a ceremonial blessing at Hemis monastery performed by the lama monks.
The first 5km, steeply downhill, saw Maricruz Lopez from Mexico taking the marathon lead, but as the route flattened
out Trausti Valdimarsson from Iceland took over. From then on he never let anyone get close enough to pass him. In the
women's competition Maricruz Lopez was unbeatable.
As if running in an altitude of 3500m wasn't hard enough the temperatures reached 35°C, but no runners gave up or
got pulled out by the medical team.

After a gripping race, local runner Jasmin Nunige and Sweden's Jonas Buud came up trumps in the 78km ultra with four
Swiss managing to secure places on the podium, writes Anita Fuchs. Buud made no distinction between this and last
year's race. "I ran at the same speed both times, and didn't look around at the competition." Buud had already
wrapped up his first interview by the time Konrad von Allmen from Olten crossed the finish line to thunderous applause
and with a pain-racked face. The former top long-distance triathlete suffered cramps on the Panorama Trail, and from the
pressure. "I did not know where the person behind me was". No complaints whatsoever about the demanding
"Mountain Classic" came from René Fuchser from Dübendorf, however, who turned up the heat after Bergün, to come
in third, as he had done last year in the K42 (Bergün–Davos, won this time by Max Frei and Diana Lehmann).
Like Buud, Nunige enjoyed a repeat win. On the ascent to Keschhütte, the highest point in the race at 2632m, she
snatched first place from pre-race favourite and winner of the last two years Elizabeth Hawker. While Nunige then kept
up a steady tempo, Hawker slowed down slightly, suffering from mild after-pains from a stress fracture. "After
throwing up, I even considered giving up" said Hawker. "In the Teufi area, someone told me that I was leading
by five minutes" said Nunige who paraded confidently through to the finish. Deborah Balz from eastern Switzerland
also looked ecstatic as she came in third after the Italian, Monica Casiraghi (winner in 2003 and 2004), pulled out of
the race in Chants. Even a fall 12km from the finish line could not keep the former duathlete and triathlete (like von
Allmen) off the podium.
Dual Swiss-Liechtenstein national, Marcel Tschopp, who will represent Liechtenstein in the Beijing Olympic marathon
on 24 August, was among the 5059 participants. He ran the K21 — which starts from the world-famous Sunniberg Bridge in
Klosters — as a training run to finish an impressive second behind the Briton, Adrian Marriott. Seraina Boner and
Seraina Mischol took a double victory in the half-marathon, just as they had done a year ago.
