4 MAY 2008: BERLIN RUNS 25km, GERMANY

Samuel Karuku

Peninah Arusei broke Susan Chepkemei's eight-year old course record by 19 seconds, while Samuel Karuku overcame the race favourite Patrick Ivuti in the 28th edition of Germany's oldest big city road race writes Jorg Wenig.

Adding all running events 8,142 athletes from 23 nations had entered the event, which finished inside the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Up by 1,000 over last year, the re-launched BERLIN RUNS is reclaiming its former glory. The main 25km race attracted 6,012 runners and 1,628 entered the 10km event while 502 children ran a 2km race.

Karuku's time was the third fastest ever in the race and extended Kenya's grip on both titles to eight years in a row. He took the lead early and was never caught as the chasing group remained 50-100m behind throughout the race. "The pacemaker was not good enough. I had asked him to go faster before he dropped out," Karuku said.

The pack behind him began to break up after half way. At 20km Ivuti was 14 seconds behind, and tried to close the gap but Karuku responded well so that Ivuti settled for second.

The women's race saw the expected battle between Peninah Arusei, who had won the race two years ago, and defending champion Flomena Chepchirchir. Arusei sureged ahead after 21km to pen a big lead and become the first woman to win both the Berlin Half Marathon (held a month ago) and the 25km.

Under sunny skies 12,815 triumphant people from 35 countries participated in the full, half, team relay, 8km and kids marathon races.

11 MAY 2008: VOLKSWAGEN PRAGUE MARATHON, CZECH REPUBLIC

Natalya Yulamanova ran 90 seconds faster than last year to defend her title. She broke away late from a pack that included Kenya's Caroline Kwambai and compatriot Alina Ivanova, a two-time champion in Prague.

Despite rising temperatures Kenneth Mungara finished in 2:11:06 to become the 10th Kenyan to win the men's title since the inaugural race in 1995. Kenyans also grabbed the other two spots on the podium. "The race was fine. The weather wasn't a problem for me," said Mungara, although for others it was. Several runners had hoped to post Olympic qualifying times in the race, but none were successful. The Czech Republic's Pavel Novak dropped out at 24km. Race favourite David Makori also dropped out. The first Czech, Robert Stefko, finished 15th with a time of 2:23:53.

11 MAY 2008: KIGALI PEACE MARATHON, RWANDA

Jacob Kendagor led a 1-2-3 Kenyan sweep and set a new course record. He was in the lead pack for the entire race and finished 30 seconds ahead of his fellow countryman Maisei Kiplimo. Sports Minister Joseph Habineza flagged off the event at Amahoro Stadium. Participants completed four laps, each of which took them back through the stadium for a complete lap within it. A half marathon and fun run were held concurrently.

Kenyans also impressed in the women's race, taking the first three slots. Tanzania's Martin Sulle and Rwanda's Angeline Nyiransabimana won the half-marathon.

The 5km race in the AIMS Children's Series was a fantastic appetizer. Over 1200 kids aged 9-13 started ahead of the top athletes. Medals and T-shirts sponsored by AIMS were given to all participants and awards from ASICS were given to the top 15 girls and boys.

The Kigali International Marathon was fully supported by Rwanda President, Paul Kagame and sponsored by Ministry of Culture and Sport, Rwanda National Olympic Committee, Soroptimist International. More than 26 nations took part. 2800 particpants were registrated.

17 MAY 2008: THE GREAT WALL MARATHON, CHINA

The Great Wall Marathon is the event that popularised adventure running and growth continued in the 9th edition with another record total field of over 1700 runners from 49 countries in the title event, a half marathon, 10km and 5km. Most foreign runners came from the USA (370), followed by Canada (142), Australia and England (134) and Germany (116).

Temperatures of around 18°C and dry conditions assisted some record performances at the front of the field and allowed slower runners to complete their challenge in relative comfort. Even so, the common view is usually: "that was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life" coupled with "but it is also one of the most enjoyable and satisfying".

Romualdo Sanchez Garita, a 2:29 marathoner, cut four minutes from the previous record with a convincing win. The Great Wall Marathon course includes 3km on the wall itself. Those in the marathon run this twice, interspersed by an undulating 25km section through Chinese villages that have hardly changed in centuries. Participants in the shorter events run across the wall once, then also enjoy some kilometres running through local villages before returning to the finish line in Ying and Yang Square.

women's dead heat

A cool morning greeted the start of the men's race, but by the time the women's race got underway an hour later temperatures were seriously on the rise, writes Ram Murali Krishnan. World Road Running champion Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea took the men's victory, while there was a dead-heat in the women's race.

South Africa's Enos Matalane and Kenyan Ezekiel Cherop were the initial leaders before World 5000m bronze medallist Moses Kipsiro of Uganda and Tanzanian Dickson Marwa joined them at the 2km mark. Pre-race favourites Tadese and Moses Masai of Kenya shortly moved in front and stayed there along with Kipsiro. Tadese went past the half-way mark in 13:58 with Kipsiro and Matthew Koech (Kenya) closely on his heels. Tsegaye Kebede, the Great Ethiopian Run winner, came from behind to join the leaders just after 7km as they were running in front of Vidhan Saudha, the provincial Karnataka legislative assembly. The runners then turned in to the picturesque Cubbon Park in the final stretch towards the finish where Tadese and Kipsiro emerged as clear leaders. Kipsiro was ahead when he entered the Sree Kanteerava Stadium but once on the synthetic track surface Tadese ran faster and overtook the Ugandan. "My legs were unable to cope with the heat of the race and I wonder what happened at the last few metres," Kipsiro confirmed after finishing three seconds behind Tadese.

Pre-race favourite Elvan Abeylegesse, the World silver medallist for 10,000m, led the women's race from the start. Berhane Adere stayed at the fore with a big bunch of runners including her team-mate Tiki Gelana, passing through 5km in 16:07. Gelana started trailing off the pace leaving Abeylegessie to contest with the Kenyan duo of Grace Momanyi and Doris Chemwego. Abeylegesse entered the stadium with Momanyi a metre behind. They ran neck-to-neck in the last few metres of the race and crossed the finish-line together in 32:02. At first Abeylegesse was announced as winner but on verification of the tape, both Abeylegesse and Momanyi were declared joint winners and so split the winnings for the first two places evenly (USD $16,000 each).

Apart from the elite races other events included a 4km wheelchair event, an open 10km race for juniors, another 4km run for the senior citizens and a 5km "Majja" Run. Around 5000 people took to the streets in the open race.

In all USD 150,000 was distributed as prize money.

Cheruiyot

In a tactical race David Cheruiyot successfully defended his title while Asmae Leghazoui took a solo victory in her debut marathon writes Paul Gaines.

After the pacemaker dropped out at 24km Cheruiyot followed countryman Vincent Kiplagat and Ethiopia's 21-year-old Solomon Molla. By 36km Kiplagat had fallen back and it Cheruiyot amd Molla remained locked in battle until the final 150m when Cheruiyot sprinted ahead to take his third victory in four years. The 38-year-old missed his own course record of 2:10:36 set last year. The race incorporated the Canadian championship, won by Congolese-born Giitah Macharia who is now a Canadian citizen just four seconds ahead of Ottawa's Mathew Mcinnis.

Leghazoui

Leghazoui made her move at 26km and won by five minutes. "I thought it was possible to run faster" she said afterwards. Four-time winner Lioudmila Kortchaguina did not start, due to a hip injury, leaving Toronto's Tara Quinn-Smith took the Canadian title, also in her debut marathon. She is part of an innovative distance running program known as the Brooks Marathon Project.

Mike Dyon, President of Brooks Shoes Canada and himself a three-time winner of the Ottawa Marathon, purchased a house in Toronto for eleven promising Canadian marathoners to live in. They live rent free and train together full time.

"It's a tremendous opportunity and it's a great support," Quinn-Smith said.

25 MAY 2008: ALBERT BARTLETT EDINBURGH MARATHON, GREAT BRITAIN

Paul McNamara, a 32-year-old Irishman who finished 129th in the Edinburgh World Cross-Country in March, returned to win the city's marathon in his first serious attempt at the distance writes Sandy Sutherland for The Scotsman.

McNamara suffered conditions variously described as "horrendous", "like being sand-blasted" and "a war of attrition" from the city centre start to finish on Musselburgh Racecourse. "I was hoping for around 2:20," said McNamara, who has a best 5000m track time of 14:06.93 and had once "jogged round" the Dublin marathon.

A stiff and cold easterly wind, which whipped up sand in the competitors' faces as they ran along Portobello promenade was a problem right up until the turn at 30km.

Pre-race favourite Michael Green said: "As soon as we hit the turn the race was on but I wasn't 100% per cent fit". Second-placed Nathaniel Williams, in his third marathon, broke his personal best by five minutes despite the conditions.

"I'd probably have run a personal best time if it hadn't been for that wind but it's a great course, I really liked it," said women's winner Pauline Powell.

31 MAY 2008: FREIHOFERS RUN FOR WOMEN 5km, USA

Benita Johnson became only the third person in the event's 30-year history to accomplish a hat-trick writes Ed Parham. She follows Lynn Jennings, an eight-time winner, and Marla Runyan. In claiming this year's win Johnson, 29, turned back the race-long challenge of a powerful Kenyan and Ethiopian contingent and claimed a prize purse in the amount of $10,000. Tragically, moments after finishing the event and calling her family with news of her victory, Johnson learned that her terminally-ill father had died. She dedicated her victory to his memory.

Johnson's strength was evident from the outset. Always at the front she led a large pack through a 5:14 opening mile with Amane Gobena, Genoveva Kigen (KEN), Jane Gakunyi (KEN), Kathy Butler (GBR), Millicent Gathoni (KEN), Everlyne Lagat (KEN) and a knot of others all holding close.

Johnson maintained relentless pressure, passing two miles in 10:20, shoulder to shoulder with Gobena but ahead of the rest. At 4km she upped the pace, clearly wanting to decide the race before the finish straight. Gobena fought hard to hang on but Johnson's strength and tenacity, coupled with her knowledge of this hilly course, turned a glimmer of daylight into a six-second advantage.

Azizza Aliyu, 22, charged through the closing mile to outkick the more-favored Gakunyi and Gathoni.

Paula Wiltse (CAN) raced to a 17:29 victory in the masters' division over 1986 race winner Marissa Hanson (nee Sutera). 1984 Olympic Marathon champion Joan Samuelson won the over 50s division.

3,385 women who followed Johnson home made it a great day for Albany, the New York State capital.

31 MAY 2008: STOCKHOLM MARATHON, SWEDEN

The 30th Stockholm Marathon, held in warm (25°C) and sunny conditions produced a record entry of 18231 runners (13911 men and 4320 women) representing 61 countries - all of these accepted five months before race day. 14680 runners started the race and 13542 crossed the finish line in the 1912 Olympic Stadium.

Willy Korir took his first victory in an international Marathon. Korir injected a faster pace after 30km when he still had compatriots Bernard Mutai and Paul Tangus as well as Tchad's Abdelkarim Abdoulaye and the defending Champion Phillip Bandawe for company.

Isabellah Andersson made her first serious attempt to run a marathon and showed masterful tactics. Andersson tracked the Swedish record holder Lena Gavelin during the first of the two laps through the capital. While most of the competitors slowed down in the final stages, Andersson stepped up the pace. 1:18:19 at the halway point was followed by a second half in 1:15:55. Gavelin struggled and lost more than six minutes.
