21-year old Abraham Cheroben produced the performance of the day, running 1:11:47 for the fourth fastest time ever. run at 25km. Janet Rono had a clear win in the women's race. Across all running events on the day total of 11,050 participated in the 34th edition.
With cool (8-11°C) and dry conditions a very fast men's race developed as nine runners passed 5km in 14:00 and 10km in 28:20. Two of the pre-race favourites then lost contact as Kenya's double world marathon champion Abel Kirui dropped back at 12km and defending champion Richard Sigei at around 16km. Cheroben pushed the pace and at 18km was a few metres ahead of his two remaining rivals, Kenneth Kipkemoi and Tebelu Zawude. In the final stages he pressed on into a headwind to widen the gap.
Janet Rono took the lead in the women's race from the start, passing 5km in 15:54 and 10km in 32:36, 37 seconds ahead. The pace was too fast: "I knew that I had to slow a bit because I would not have been able to hold on for the whole distance," said Rono, but she still managed to increase her lead during the second half of the race. Maja Neuenschwander came through in the later stages to take third and break the 25-year old Swiss national record by 10 seconds.MEN: 1 Abraham CHEROBEN KEN 1:11:47 2 Kenneth KIPKEMOI KEN 1:12:32 3 Tebalu ZAWUDE ETH 1:13:09 4 Richard SIGEI KEN 1:13:11 5 Marc KORIR KEN 1:14:06 6 Abel KIRUI KEN 1:14:22 7 Abraham KIPYATICH KEN 1:15:11 8 Peter SOME KEN 1:15:59 WOMEN: 1 Janet RONO KEN 1:24:37 2 Valentine KIBET KEN 1:26:18 3 Maja NEUENSCHWANDER SUI 1:27:01 4 Rodah TANUI KEN 1:28:38 5 Chelangat SANG KEN 1:32:06

4 MAY 2014: GENEVA MARATHON FOR UNICEF, SWITZERLAND
Registrations increased by over 50% to 14,050 runners, representing over 125 nationalities, taking part in the different races, including the new 10km night race for runners and walkers. Despite the blustery conditions new Marathon course records were set in both divisions.
Two thousand started the 10th Geneva Marathon and faced strong headwinds in the first half. At halfway a tightly-bunched group passed through in 66 minutes. Simon Mukun took the lead in the 38th kilometre and raced on to the finish cheered by thousands of spectators lining the Mont-Blanc bridge in Geneva.
Milka Jerotich and Workitu Ayana from Ethiopia battled for supremacy in the women's race and with less than 5km to go, Ayanu held a 67 second lead over Jerotich. But Jerotich dug deep and overhauled Ayanu and sprinted across the finish line in a time 11 minutes faster than the previous course record.
The largest field of 5,350 runners took part in the Half-Marathon. Swedish national Adil Bouafif prevailed, leading from start to finish. French champion Aline Camboulives also dominated her race winning for a third time in a row.
335 teams took the start of the Relay Marathon, compared to 180 in 2013, demonstrating the increasing popularity of this type of event. Teams of 4-6 persons, totaling nearly 2,000 runners, raced various distances of the Marathon course.
Eighty thousand spectators lined the race courses in the Jardin Anglais on the shores of Lake Geneva and along the Marathon route to support the runners over the weekend. The course combines the best features of the City of Geneva and the beautiful surrounding countryside, nestled between the Jura and the highest Alpine summits as it winds its way through 10 surrounding villages before the final stage along the shores of the lake and the finish line on the iconic Mont-Blanc bridge.

Edwin Kemboi, married to an Austrian and living in the country for over a year, became the first Kenyan to win the Austrian National Marathon Championships. Karin Freitag, second in the women's event to Nancy Joan Rotich, became female Austrian National Marathon Champion for the third time in a row.
While Rotich and Freitag each ran solo the men's marathon was fascinating until the last few metres. Kemboi and Julius Koech struggled over the last 3km after having built up a huge lead on the rest of the field. Despite the muscle problems, Kemboi gained two seconds over his compatriot.
Overall there were 6,718 participants, of whom 1202 ran the marathon and 2773 the half.

Photos: Volkswagen Prague Marathon
In strong wind and rain in the final stages Patrick Terer won the 20th anniversary edition of the Volkswagen Prague Marathon, improving on his third place of last year, with a personal best. Evans Chebet crossed the line only 10 seconds adrift. Zimbabwe's Cuthbert Nyasango broke the national record in third. Firehiwot Dado dominated the women's race leaving compatriots Fantu Eticha and Ashete Bekere well behind.
Pacemakers, took the lead group through 10km in 30:05 and halfway in 1:03:34, but when pacing stopped after 30km Terer and Chebet and carved out a big gap. "It was our plan to attack once the pacemaker was out of the race," explained Terer. Terer opened a gap of four seconds at 37km and gradually extended it but Chebet remained in contention, keeping the leader in sight right to the finish in the Old Town Square.
Cuthbert Nyasango in third place became the first athlete from Zimbabwe to clock a sub 2:10 time, following his surprise seventh place in the Olympic marathon in 2012. A month ago Firehiwot Dado was ninth in the Sportissimo Prague Half Marathon in 1:11:15. In the Marathon she passed the half way mark in 1:11:45. By 30km she had dropped her rivals and was on course to break her personal best of 2:23:15, but rain and wind in the late stages slowed her.

More than 24,000 runners took part over the four distances offered: 5km, 10km and half marathon as well as the classic distance. The 24th edition was the most international and largest running event in the Baltic countries.
Defending champion Duncan Koech was unable to fight off the challenge of Japan's Yu Chiba, who triumphed in a new course record. Valerijs Zolnerovics, who set a national record of 2:14:33 in Frankfurt last October, was the leading Latvian runner.
There was also a surprise women's winner with Ethiopia's Tigist Teshome Ayanu taking 23 seconds off the course record set by her compatriot Desta Girma Tadesse three years ago. Ayanu finished 11th overall and won by more than three minutes.

Daniel Wanjiru and Thomas Lokomwa led a group of eight men through the uphill first 2.5km at the head of the 3000-strong field and passed 5km in 14:48. By 10k Wanjiru had he lost 50 seconds on the leaders while 18-year old Ethiopian Teshome Mekonen broke from the pack at 8km and by 10k was seven seconds ahead. At 14km Mekonen was startled by a dog, but laughed as he continued at 2:50/km pace. By 15k he had opened a 28-second gap and went on to win in an event record.
The star perfromance in the women's came from a veteran not a youngster. Christelle Daunay, 39, lead four women through 5km at which point defending champion Mame Feyisa had already dropped back, leaving just Daunay, Kumeshi Sichala together with Lucy Liavoga in third. By 10km Liavoga trailed by 200m as Daunay continued to set the pace to lead by 14 seconds at 15km. At 17km she passed a badly limping Daniel Wanjiru who dropped out shortly thereafter. Daunay finished 3.5 minutes under the event record as the first four women all finished inside it.

25 MAY 2014: EDINBURGH MARATHON, GREAT BRITAIN
More than 30,000 people took part in the Edinburgh Running Festival, with the 12th edition of the Marathon welcoming runners from over 100 countries.
Favourite David Toniok finished only seven seconds outside the course record set by Zachary Kihara in 2005. He led for the first 11km before being joined by Japhet Koech and Elicky Mase, and at halfway by Linus Maiyo. At 30km Koech upped the pace and Maiyo dropped back, but at 35km Toniok drew ahead and maintained momentum to the line. Female winner Kateryna Stetsenko defeated defending champion Risper Kimaiyo after going ahead at 33km. Kerry Liam Nelson, 43, was the first Scot across the finish line with 2:28:04.
The Half Marathon was won by Ross Houston who will be taking part in the Commonwealth Games Marathon in nearby Glasgow. Northern Ireland's Gladys Ganiel, 37, won the women's event because "I needed to show form to be picked for the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Team — I hope I've done enough." Third-placed Hayley Haining used the race as part of her preparation for the same event, but will be running for Scotland.
Steven Bonthone, 43, won an ambitious race against time to complete all four adult races, running a total of 78km during the two-day running festival to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Steve said: "I ran the 5k and 10k, Half and Full Marathon to honour my dad's memory who lost his battle with oeophageal cancer in July 2013. He inspired me to take up running and took me along to my first run when I was young." Bonthone completed the Half Marathon in 1:33:58 before jumping on a motorbike back to the city centre, joining the crowd in the nick of time to run the full Marathon — which he finished in 4:26:15. The day before he had completed the EMF 10km in 41:33 and the 5km in 20:39.
Entries for the next edition on 30-31 May 2015 opened on 26 May at www.edinburgh-marathon.com
