4 APRIL 2014: DEAD SEA ULTRAMARATHON 50km, JORDAN
Jordan's Olympic marathoner Methqal Alabadi won the 21st Dead Sea Ultra Marathon with a string final third of the race writes Norrie Williamson. Mosab Meqdady and Ahmad Muhaisen set the early pace on the steep downhill from 7–27km while Alabadi languished in fifth to tenth place early on. But the likeable Jordanian upped the pace and carved his way to the front to leave his nearest competitor, Fatih Oudey, over a kilometre behind by the finish.
Razan Muqbel and Ali Hanoi exchanged the lead in the women's race many times but it was just too much of a stretch for Muqbel to hang-on when Ali made her break after passing through 35km.
The Dead Sea is a destination for both tourists and runners alike, because of the uniqueness of the race, and for the vast range of sights and attractions. These include the Baptism site, Jerash &mdahs; said to be the second best-preserved Roman city outside Italy, Petra, one of the worlds oldest cities, and Mount Neba where Moses first sighted the "land of milk and honey". With the race on Friday it is an ideal long weekend "run and see" especially for European runners only a few hours flight away.
The race starts in the Jordanian capital, Amman, at a height of nearly 990m and after 7km of undulations, drops precipitously to 38km where a more gradual slope then take runners down to the final "depth" of 440m below sea level.
The event, which offers distances of 10km, 21km and 50km, attracts 40000 participants and runners from 50 countries. All races finish at the Amman beach on the water's edge allowing the runners to float their way back to recovery in the Dead Sea — nature's largest natural hyperbaric chamber.

Joyce Chepkirui dominated the race from the start to set a course record and the fifth fastest time ever run on a record eligible course. The men's race also produced very fast times in fine weather conditions. Kenya's Peter Kirui set a personal best of 59:22, the sixth fastest time run this year. 12,500 runners entered the event.
Chepkirui burst away from her rivals right after the start, guided by her husband, pacemaker and coach Erick Kibet she went through 5km in 15:16 and 10km in 30:56, on course to break the world record. However she slowed in the third 5km section, passing 15km in 46:49.
"I hoped to run under 66 minutes, but the last kilometre was getting very tough." she said. It was the fourth time in a row that the women's course record was broken: in 2011 by Lydia Cheromei with 67:33, then Chepkirui with 1:07:03 and a year ago Gladys Cherono clocked 66:48. Five women finished inside 70 minutes. The men were always on course for a time of around 59 minutes. A group of eight passed 10km mark in 28:07 behind Kenyan pacemaker Hillary Kipchumba. When Peter Kirui moved away in the 14th kilometre he was soon on his own. He passed 15km in 42:01 Kirui, 15 seconds ahead of a chasing group of four runners and more than doubled this advantage by the finish.

Yemane Tsegay Adhane lived up to his billing as race favourite and won in a course record time writes Phil Minshull. Adhane took more than a minute off the previous record. It was his seventh victory in 19 outings to date, and extended his streak of winning at least one marathon every year since he made his debut in 2008.
Mulu Seboka made it an Ethiopian double by taking the women's title with her third consecutive Marathon victory, and the fifth Ethiopian victory in the women's race of the six editions held. It is the third consecutive win for the prolific Seboka, running her 31st marathon. She had finished second in Daegu for the last two years.

Kenenisa Bekele's dream debut did not quite materialise — he did not break the world record — but he did win in a new course record writes Jon Mulkeen.
The race was built for Bekele. He was one of a group of about 16 runners, headed by three pacemakers, who went through 5km in 14:43 and 10km in 29:35. By 15km (44:15) there were 12, and nine at halfway, reached in 1:02:09, — 29 seconds adrift of the planned schedule. At 25km (1:13:53) the final pacemaker dropped out, which left Bekele as the leader. Just two kilometres later, he went ahead with fellow Ethiopian Tamirat Tola, chased by Mike Kigen, Limenih Getachew and Gideon Kipketer. After 30km (1:28:39) Bekele kicked on and was out in front alone. He went through 35km in 1:43:36 with a lead of 45 seconds. Behind him, Getachew had moved into second place as Tola began to fade. Further back, Jackson Limo had passed a tiring Kigen. Bekele crossed the line in 2:05:03 to take nine seconds off the course record set two years ago by Stanley Biwott. His time is the sixth-fastest marathon debut in history on a record-eligible course, and the fastest ever debut by someone older than 30.
Kenya's Flomena Cheyech lived up to pre-race expectations to win the women's race, but in a time that exceeded expectations. A compact lead group ran together for the first half. After passing 15km in 51:04, Cheyech took the lead and began her long run for home. As she upped the tempo her lead grew. Despite looking tired in the closing stages she came home almost two minutes faster than she had ever run before. It was the fourth-fastest winning time in the French capital. Almost four minutes behind her, Ethiopia's Yebrgual Melese took more than three minutes off the personal best she set earlier this year in Dubai on her marathon debut.

13 APRIL 2014: 31st VIENNA CITY MARATHON, AUSTRIA
Getu Feleke clocked a superb course record well ahead of his Kenyan opposition, but there was a major upset in the women's race. With 300m to go Germany's Anna Hahner passed a struggling Caroline Chepkwony to secure her first marathon victory. A record number of 42,078 runners from 127 nations entered the various events of the Vienna City Marathon and enjoyed fine but windless and cool weather (10°C), although in the later stages it started raining and the wind picked up.
A group of 12 passed 10km in 29:45 minutes, reduced to eight by halfway (1:02:42). At 25km there were four runners running behind two pacemakers: Feleke plus Kenyans Philip Kimutai, Felix Kiprotich and Wilfred Kirwa Kigen. By 30km (1:28:48) the last pacemaker had dropped out and Feleke took up the running bursting away with a 2:46 kilometre. No one was able to follow him.
The women's race was a completely different story. Pre-race favourite Caroline Chepkwony took control from the start, running in a lead group of four with Marta Lema, Alice Chelangat and Mai Ito. She moved ahead before 20km and at halfway was 20 seconds ahead. She soon had a huge lead, but Germany's Anna Hahner gradually overtook one of the faltering front runners after another until she took second place at 35km. "That was the best I could have hoped for," Hahner later explained, with Chepkwony 2:23 ahead of her.
But everything suddenly changed as, with a few kilometres to go the Kenyan dramatically slowed and Hahner quickly made up ground. At 40km there was still a 1:24 gap between them, but with 300m to go Hahner caught Chepkwony, who could barely run any more. "I am totally overwhelmed and still in dreamland," said Hahner, who waltzed to the finish line for the first German victory in Vienna since Christa Vahlensiek in 1989.

21 APRIL 2014: BAA BOSTON MARATHON, USA
Rita Jeptoo magisterially defended her title and broke the course record with the first sub-2:20 performance in Boston and anywhere in the world since she herself ran 2:19:57 in the Chicago Marathon last October (before then it was Mary Keitany and Tiki Gelana in April 2012). Meb Keflezighi scored the first win for a US citizen in the men's race since Greg Meyer won in 1983, in a time only 24 seconds slower. Jeptoo beat the course record set 12 years before by Margaret Okayo.
Shalane Flanagan led the women's race for 33km, but Jeptoo kicked in with a devastating 15:44 5km split from 35-40km, and sailed away from the opposition. Flanagan held on to set a personal best in seventh, and faster than any other US woman has run in Boston.
Keflezighi had a curiously unimpeded win, getting clear with US team-mate Josphat Boit to lead by 10 seconds as early as 15km. They ran together to 25km, but then Keflezighi forged ahead alone, leading by 50 seconds at 35km. But in the next 5km Kenya's Wilson Chebet closed down on him rapidly to trail by only 8 seconds at 40km. With the crowd baying, Keflezighi found what was needed in the closing stages and held on to take the win 11 seconds ahead of Chebet.

27 APRIL 2014: SUISSEGAS BELGRADE MARATHON, SERBIA
The 27th edition yielded Kenyan victories for Benard Kipkorir Talam and Valary Jemeli Aiyabei. Talam broke away from Paul Kimeli Samoei after 32km and fought the strong headwind to reach the finish line in a new personal best.
The women's race also surprised with Ethiopia's Ayano Yenealem Buli vying for the lead with Kenya's Valary Jemeli Aiyabei until 26km when she began to suffer from the heat, and dropped back to finish third.
The Balkan Marathon Championships was held concurrently, and the winners were Vitalie Gheorgita (MDV) with 2:31:22 and Ana Subotic (SRB) with 2:44:03. In the half marathon, which also served as the Serbian Championships, Darko Zivanovic won the men's race in 1:08:59, while Olivera Jevtic took the women's title in 1:19:20. She may not be in the same form which earned here the course record here a half dozen years ago, but the wind strength may be judged from the fact that Jevtic has run the course in 1:11:41. There were close to 25,000 competitors in the three events, marathon, half-marathon, and 5km fun run.

27 APRIL 2014: BIG SUR INT'L MARATHON, USA
Two veteran runners, Michael Wardian, 40, and Nuta Olaru, 43, took top honors. Wardian, a four-time U.S. Ultra Marathoner of the Year who recently completed the North Pole Marathon, gained his first Big Sur victory in four attempts. He outpaced two-time defending champion Adam Roach as the two ran together for the first five miles before Wardian pulled away. Olaru was never tested. Even after running a strong Boston Marathon on Monday, she won handily. Though her time was slower than her previous two Big Sur victories, she became the first female to "three-peat".
Within the marathon category is a special division — Boston 2 Big Sur (B2B) — comprised of 400 athletes who finished the Boston Marathon the previous Monday as well as Big Sur. Along with his Big Sur victory, Wardian also won the B2B, setting a new record of a 5:33 combined time. Olaru, who ran Boston in 2:37:29 would have set a new B2B female record of 5:30:44 if she had entered this category.
California's scenic Highway 1 was filled with more than 6,500 runners and walkers in six distance events including the marathon, marathon relay, 21, 10.6 and 9-Milers and a 5K. Having sold out in just 59 minutes last year, the organization will be announcing a new registration policy in mid-May. For more information and results from today's race go to www.bsim.org.

Henry Chirchir won a first marathon victory in windy conditions just a stride ahead of Francis Bowen and both were given the same time. Nine men reached halfway in 1:04:32 but due to the rising wind the pace dropped in the second half. Likewise in the women's race Souad Ait Salem passed through halfway in 1:13:23, and stretched her lead to two minutes at 25km. Her poursuivants narrowed the gap in the final stages but could not close it. A record 18,418 runners entered the various race day events.
The men's race started slower than planned. Nine runners passed halfway in 1:04:32. Up until 25km they were on target for a 2:09 finish, but the wind got up and rising temperatures also slowed the runners. The race turned into a more tactical affair but reached a dramatic climax at the end. At 40km five runners were still in contention. The oldest of them, 40 year-old Francis Bowen, attacked in the final 2km but was pipped by Chirchir.

Six days after Boston there was another surprising American marathon victory: In rainy conditions Annie Bersagel won Dusseldorf after overtaking race favourite Selomie Getnet with only 3km to go. The Ethiopian race favourite had a big lead in the middle of the race.
Gilbert Yegon missed the course record by 19 seconds in the men's race. The race had started fast (15km in 44:56, 2:06 pace) and 16 runners were still together at halfway (1:03:31) but the cold and wet conditions slowed everyone in the second half. Five were left at 35km, but only Yegon pushed the pace. Endeshaw Negesse hung on to finish second.
Getnet had gone out fast, and passed halfway in 1:13:25, with only Winifridah Kwamboka attempting to keep pace. Bersagel, running alongside Kenya's Emily Ngetich, went through halfway 1:37 down. Bersagel later said "[At 38km] I suddenly saw the lead car and I realised that I [had] made up ground quickly," She went on to become the first US winner in Dusseldorf.
Over all race day events, a total of 16,000 runners participated.
