Two new course records were set in exciting finishes to the 50th anniversary race. Cheered on by thousands of spectators, more than 15,000 runners ran through scenic Calgary neighbourhoods and raised a record-breaking $1,150,000 for 91 charities through the Scotiabank Charity Challenge, exceeding last year's total by $123.000 (76 charities).
Kip Kangogo beat the old record by three minutes while Emily Chepkorir's performance in the women's race improved the old record by over five minutes.

1 JUNE 2014: COMRADES MARATHON, SOUTH AFRICA
The usual heart-wrenching drama unfolded on the approaches to the Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in the final stages of the 89th edition, an 89km "down" run from Pietermaritzburg City Hall to the coastal resort of Durban. After early contenders gong for the catch-sprint bonuses faded nearing halfway, the first serious contender to emerge in the men's race was seasoned Marathoner Gert Thuys. But after taking the lead on the long hill approaching halfway, and completing what appeared to be a pre-planned change of footwear 3:15 into the race (c.54km), he stopped to walk several times. What had been a six-minute lead over Marko Mambo reduced to nothing by 62km. Mambo had been running ahead of the pack from as early as 30km, and was in turn hunted down, Cramping badly he was passed by the ever-diminishing pack as he lay on the side of the road at 67km. Rufus Photo broke from the group just before, and took the lead with a half-marathon distance still to run. He built up a 30-second gap impressively quickly but Bongmusa Mthembu, emerging from the chasing trio, scooped him up with 17km to go. Five km later his lead over Gift Kelehe and two-time winner Stephen Muzhingi was approaching 3 minutes, Ludwick Mamabolo timed his finishing effort later and overtook the chasing pair, but Mthembu remained strong until the final few kilometres extending his winning margin to five minutes.
Not so for the Nurgalieva twins in the women's race. Olesya took the lead from her more favoured sister Elena late on in the race, and they held a nine-minute lead over any other rival with only 18km to run. Cramping and walking, Olesya appeared to wait for Elena to catch her in the hope of finding a shared momentum, but Ellie Greenwood, who later claimed to have felt terrible in the early stages, made up the gap and forged five-minute winning margin in the final few kilometres after entering Durban.

1 JUNE 2014: LANZHOU INT'L MARATHON, CHINA
Gilbert Chepkwony and Eunice Jepkorir became the first Kenyan winners of this race in the fourth edition writes John Mulkeen. Jepkirui smashed the course record and won by more than six minutes on a difficult course along the Yellow River. She was among a 12-woman lead pack that went through 5km in around 18 minutes but she kicked on after 10km and was almost a minute clear at 15km. She went through halfway just outside 1:15 with the chasing pack of nine now two minutes adrift. As Jepkirui crossed the finish line, a three-way battle between a trio of Ethiopian athletes. Atsede Baysa, former middle-distance specialist Meskerem Assefa and teenager Alem Mokonnin passed through 40km together in 2:30:26, but Baysa drew on her experience to edge ahead in the final kilometre.
Gilbert Chepkwony waited until much later to make his move. By halfway Chepkwony, Sahle Warga and Tariku Jufar were in front with a split of 1:06:20. After 30km (1:35:20) Jufar began to drift back. Warga then began to lose contact with Chepkwony as Kenya's William Chebor, having remained a few seconds behind the leading pack for the duration of the race, moved up into second. By then Chepkwony's lead was safe and he went on to record the second fastest winning time in Lanzhou.

21 JUNE 2014: MATTONI HALF MARATHON OLOMOUC, CZECH REPUBLIC
Geoffrey Ronoh, with only one professional race under his belt, was enlisted by marathon world-record-holder Wilson Kipsang to set his pace but Rono pullled ahead of his famous training partner over the final 3km for an eight-second victory in a new event-record. It took Marathon world champion Edna Kiplagat only 5km, passed in 15:50, before she started to edge away to a 30-second victory over defending champion Betelhem Moges in another event record. By the time she hit 10km (32:16) she was 16 seconds clear of Moges and Faith Kipsum and her advantage grew from there.
This is the first time in the 20-year history of RunCzech events that a pacer has won a race. Historically it has not it is not that rare an event, but this case was more unexpected because the race was read as a showdown between 2:03 marathoners Kipsang and fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto. It never materialised, as from the start Kipsang, Ronoh and Nicholas Bor took off by themselves and were 100m ahead at 5km. "That was part of the plan," Kipsang said. "We wanted to run hard and then stabilise." It worked, because Kimetto admitted that: "I did not think that [such] a fast pace was going to happen from the start," Bor was dropped before 8km as runners passed through Smetana Gardens, leaving Ronoh and Kipsang out in front. They passed 10km in 28:16, 20 seconds clear of Kimetto.
"I started training with him [Kipsang] last December," said Ronoh. "On long runs [it is] the last kilometer where I feared him because he has a hard kick." They reached the 18th-century military hospital at 15km in 42:43, Ronoh tried to temp Kipsang to pass him. When he didn't Ronoh stepped up the pace. "I tried to push before reaching the last kilometre, to be ahead [so] he could not catch me." Ronoh then opened up a 40m lead which was too much for Kipsang to claw back.

28 JUNE 2014: 18th VIDOVDAN 10km ROAD RACE, BOSNIA-HERCEGOVINA
In a city that suffered massive floods just a month ago the race took place in very warm conditions. The race favorites, Darko Zivznovic and Aniko Kalovics, took charge from the start.
After 4km Srfdan Samardzic had speeded up, taking over the lead to the great joy of his fellow citizens. Zivanovic seemed uncertain at 7km but in the last 1500m he reclaimed top spot. To the delight of the home crowd, Samardzic maintained his second place spot.
In the women's race Aniko Kalovics brooked no opposition, although Mateja Matosevic (CRO) struggled to catch up and eventually finished second.
The 10km race was preceded by children's age-group races, with over 5000 children participating. Baby races over 10m and races for children under 6, which attracted more than 1000 entries, brought special delight to spectators.
Families who had suffered from the great flooding last month, and who were housed in a city sports hall for more than a month, received humanitarian aid from the race. In a spirit of solidarity most of those who won prize money donated it to charity. Children from neighbouring countries Serbia, Croatia and other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina gave paintings to their newly acquired friends at the race. These will be exhibited at the Krepsic village school near Brcko, which was almost completely destroyed by the flooding.
