2 FEBRUARY 2014: 68th KAGAWA-MARUGAME INT'L HALF MARATHON, JAPAN

Kagawa-Marugame Marathon

Race favourite Martin Mathathi won in the third-fastest time yet run, just 23 seconds short of Mekubo Meguso's 2007 course record writes Ken Nakamura.

Kagawa-Marugame Marathon

Just before 10km, Japan's Kenta Murayama edged ahead to pass through in 28:29 with five runners — Mathathi, the Japanese pair of Hiroto Inoue and Masato Kiuchi, Kenya's Daniel Kitonyi and Australia's defending champion Collis Birmingham four seconds behind. Mathathi soon gave chase and caught Murayama at 13km. They ran together through 15km in 42:48 before Mathathi pulled away to eventually cross the line 39 seconds ahead. Behind him Murayama ran the third fastest time ever by a Japanese, but said: "I was shooting for a low 60 minutes. I lacked the endurance." Defending champion Birmingham finished a disappointing 15th in 1:02:40.

Japan's Eri Makikawa, only 20, was the surprise winner of the women's race on her competitive debut. Colombia's Yolanda Caballero had set the early pace, passing through 10km in 33:12 with only Makikawa able to stay close. They ran together though 15km in 50:03 before the local runner pulled ahead.

14 FEBRUARY 2014: RAS AL KHAIMAH HALF MARATHON, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Painfully slow starts in both races put paid to records on a clear, still, race morning. Things livened up after 5km, but despite the front-running efforts of Bernard Koech and Priscah Jeptoo, in the men's and women's races respectively, the chance for really fast times had already slipped away.

Koech, Boston winner Lelisa Desisa and eventual third placer Wilson Kiprop pushed the tempo, running a second 5km of 14:01 and a third of 14:08, to put a sub-60 minute clocking back on the cards. Desisa and Eritrea's late developer Nguse Amlosom cut loose with 3km to go and a kilometre later Desisa won a critical gap that he held to the end. Behind them the next six athletes battled to the line, all of them going under the hour. Never before have eight men done so in the same race.

After a similarly slow opening 5km the women's race was blown apart by Priscah Jeptoo. Her second 5km (15:27) was fully 1:47 faster than the first. Flomena Cheyech, Guteni Shone and Helah Kiprop remained within a few seconds of her, but she ran the next 5km in exactly the same time and only slowed slightly from there to 20km, picking up again in the last 1.1km to win by 71 seconds. Behind her, the next five athletes broke 69 minutes and three more were under 70 minutes.

Nearly 5000 people took part in this year's 50th anniversary event. Started in 1964, the race was not held for a four-year peiod in the 1990s. The forecast temperature of 38°C fortunately did not materialise. Although it was still a hot and blustery day, overall the conditions were pleasant for running with the Marathon starting at 05:15. Many international runners participated, coming from Germany, Belgium, United Kingdom and the USA, among other places. Next year's Cape Peninsula Marathon will take place on Sunday 15, February 2015.

16 FEBRUARY 2014:STANDARD CHARTERED HONG KONG MARATHON

Neither Feyera Gemeda nor Rehima Kedir were on the list of official invitees but they won the men's and women's races after paying their own way to the race from Addis Ababa writes Pat Butcher. Defending champion Julius Maisei was pre-race favourite for the men's race but Gemeda bided his time among more than 20 runners who passed halfway in 70 minutes. "I was waiting for Maisei to push and there were some others with faster times than me. But when we got to 37k, I saw I could win" said Gemeda. He pushed on and Masei dropped back, with the three others doing likewise soon afterwards as Gemeda kept the pressure on to complete a second half five minutes faster than the first.

Kedir took the women's title for her second successive marathon victory after a win in Beirut last November. She also beat the defending champion, fellow Ethiopian Misiker Mekonnin, who was going for a third win but fell short by 12 seconds. Kedir complained of hamstring trouble after 32km and said she only felt confident of winning in the final kilometre.

On one of the most temperate days the race has every enjoyed over 60,000 people took to the streets in the various races, with the overall prize money totalling $300,000.

23 FEBRUARY 2014: MARATON DE SEVILLA, SPAIN

Sevilla offers one of the flattest marathon courses in Europe, and the course record was improved in this 30th edition of the race by Kenyan debutant Cosmas Kiplimo Lagat. Pamela Rotich took a very narrow victory over the Spaniard Elena Maria Espeso. It was again a sunny race day for 9,000 registered runner to enjoy the city centre of one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. Lagat pulled away early on and ran with a pacemaker to 28km, before completing the last third of the race alone.

Pamela Rotich set a new personal best and gained and her first victory in a marathon. She was the fastest yo halfway (in 1:15), but Espeso pushed hard to cross the finish line only five seconds behind her in a thrilling finish.
