1 JANUARY 2014: NEUJAHRSMARATHON ZURICH, SWITZERLAND
The winners of this first marathon of 2014 were both Swiss. Philipp Arnold took the lead from Marcel Knape with just 3km to go to win by just over a minute. Last year's runner-up Christophe Scherno came in third. In the women's race Astrid Mueller celebrated another gun-to-tape victory after previous successes in 2010, 2011 and 2013. A record 815 runners from 36 different countries participated in the various races. 250 of them ran the full midnight marathon, also a new record.

Despite favourable conditions the men's race started slowly so that a sixth successive course record was never likely writes Mirko Jalava. Mare Dibaba, on the other hand, ran away from the other women from the start, passing 10km in 33:33 and 20km in 1:06:10. Running completely alone but cheered on by spectators thronging the route through the coastal city, she slowed slightly during in second half but finished just over a minute inside Zhang Yingying's 2008 course record. Behind her Meseret Legese set a personal by nearly a minute and a half even though she was also running alone.
The men stayed in a big group through to just before 30km and, with the pacemaking finished, Mariko Kiplagat went to the front and quickly opened up a gap. The 38 year-old Kenyan was only seventh in Xiamen 12 months ago but his move this year was decisive. Kiplagat extended his lead to more than a minute in the stretch between 30km and 40km for an easy win in the second fastest time of his career. Dereje Debele was initially able to get away from the rest of the field, but Julius Muriuki recovered after initially being dropped and came through strongly in the final kilometres to snatch second place from Debele.

Evans Ruto fell just one second short of the course record in the 11th edition, while last year's women's runner-up, Dinknesh Mekash, went one better this year writes Ram Murali Krishnan.
Pacemakers Michael Mutai and Soyekwo Kibet led a big group over the Rajiv Gandhi Sealink to reach halfway in 1:04:44. The lead group only thinned out after pacing ended at 30km, and after ascending the challenging hill at 35km only Lawrence Kimaiyo, Philemon Baaru and Evans Ruto were left. They stayed together all the way around Marine Drive with Ruto making his kick in the final kilometre. It was the first time the top three had all broken 2:10 in Miumbai, although the top two had done so in 2011 and 2013.
Mekash and Gladys Kipsoi dominated the women's race. Kipsoi, was running only her second marathon after having run 1:09:11 in the half marathon last year.
Karan Singh finished top among the Indian men, but his winning time of 2:24:08 was the slowest in eight years. Lalita Babbar, winner in Mumbai for the previous two years, extended her streak to three titles and improved her course record to 2:50:31

In Brazil many people say that the year only begins after Carnival, but this is not so for fans of road racing. Each 20th January thousands of runners (this year 5000) take to the streets of Aterro do Flamengo to celebrate St. Sebastian's day — who is the patron saint of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Before the event Rio's archbishop, Dom Orani Tempesta, blessed all the participants and the attending authorities.
