4 APRIL 2015: OLD MUTUAL TWO OCEANS MARATHON 56km, SOUTH AFRICA
The tiny mountain kingdom of Lesotho took two podium places which winner Motlokoa Nkhabutlane put down to their strong focus on group training. The day's biggest surprise was Caroline Wöstmann's win the women's race — the first by a South African since 2001. She improved 70 minutes on her 2014 time. Wöstmann inched her way to the front of the pack until she finally passed Podnebesnova, who had maintained a strong lead until that point, in the final 5km.
Stephen Mokoka successfully defended his Half Marathon title in a sprint finish. The Phalula twins dominated the women's race, with Lebogang winning and her sister Diana (defending her 2014 title) finishing third.
Title Sponsor Old Mutual had originally offered a million-grand prize to anyone breaking the 56km records, but the times set in 1988–89 remain in place for another year.

5 APRIL 2015: DAEGU INT'L MARATHON, KOREA
Both recording their second career victories Girmay Birhanu and Meselech Melkamu made it three times in six years that Ethiopian had won both titles in Daegu writes Jon Mulkeen. Birhanu's winning time was the second-fastest recorded while Melkamu finished over two minutes ahead of her nearest rival.
Six men led through the first half, but Birhanu forged ahead in the final miles for an emphatic win. Making his marathon debut, 20-year-old Son Myeong-Jon was the top Korean finisher in fifth.
The women's race played out in much the same way as Melkamu built up an unassailable in the second half of the race. It was her sloweest trime yet but her first victory since her debut in Frankfurt three years ago. Yeum Ko-Eun, the top Korean finisher, improved on her debut time by almost nine minutes. 14,452 runners finished the race.

Evergreen Kenneth Mungara, now 41, ran the fastest marathon ever by a runner over 40 — shaving two seconds from the time Mexico's Andres Espinosa ran in the 2003 Berlin Marathon writes Diego Sampaolo. His compatriot Lucy Karimi took the women's title.
Nine men, including pacemakers Emmanuel Kichwen and Asbel Kipsang, went through halfway in 1:04:11. Kipsang and Kichwen passed 30km in 1:31:22, 10 seconds ahead of the group, but after they dropped out it was down to five runners: Mungara, Philemon Baaru, Samson Bungei, Cyprian Kotut and William Koitile This group battled it out until 40km before Mungara broke away with one kilometre to go to beat Kotut, the younger brother of three-time London Marathon winner Martin Lel, by 11 seconds. It was Kotut's debut marathon. Mungara has won 10 of his 21 marathons in a late-blooming career. He only started running seriously in his early 30s, famously deciding to take up the sport when runners featured among his clients at his barber's shop.
The women's lead group comprised three Ethiopians and three Kenyans, including London and New York winner Priscah Jeptoo, who was only aiming to go to 30km. Jeptoo, Lucy Karimi and Geda Ayelu Lemma reached halfway together in 1:11:23. At 30km Jeptoo led through in 1:41:53 10 seconds ahead of Karimi but then dropped out, leaving Karimi alone at the front with an advantage of 54 seconds over Lemma. Karimi steadily increased her margin of supremacy over her Ethiopian rival to more than two minutes at the finish line.
More than 15,000 runners took part in the two main events (5000 in the Marathon and over 10,000 in the mass Relay Marathon representing 2570 teams running for charity organizations. Former marathon world record holder and two-time 10,000m Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie ran on the first leg of the Relay.

Mark Korir surprised by running more than a minute faster than his personal best to win the 39th edition writes Miriam Walker-Khan. He overhauled his compatriot Mike Kigen at 37km, after Kigen had tried to run away from the rest of the field at 32km.
The leaders passed halfway in 1:03:23 but the pace steadily increased in the second half and Kigen passed 35km in 1:44:18. Korir later said: "I didn't go off with Kigen… because I wanted to run at my own pace."
Ethiopia's Meseret Mengistu made a huge breakthrough to win the women's race and take almost six minutes off her best time after a thrilling finish with compatriot Amane Gobena. Gobena went ahead with 2km to go only for Mengistu to fight back and go past her in the final 500m. Behind them Visiline Jepkesho also improved her personal best, by over two minutes.
A record 41,342 runners participated with 40% coming from outside France, representing 150 countries. It was the largest field ever outside of the New York City Marathon, which tops 50,000 runners. Chicago is the only other marathon ever to exceed 40000 finishers (40801 in 2014). Starting on the Champs Elysée close by the Arc de Triomphe, runners pass many of the French capital's most historic landmarks, including the Place de la Concorde, Jardin des Tuilleries, Place Vendome, Louvre, Hotel de Ville, Place de la Bastille, Bois de Vincennes, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Eiffel Tower and the Bois de Boulogne before finishing on the Avenue Foch.

Abera Kuma pulled away from his rivals in the last 7km of the 35th edition writes Cors van den Brink. He nevertheless expressed disappointment, complaining about the wind having prevented him posting a new personal best (2:05:56, 3rd in Berlin last year).
After passing 10km in 29:03 and continuing to rocket around the Dutch port city the pacemakers passed halfway in 1:02:04 with 10 runners on their tail. Just before crossing the Erasmus Bridge again at 25km two pacemakers finished. The final pacer dropped out at 30km leaving two Kenyans and three Ethiopians: Bernard Koech, Kuma, Mark Kiptoo, Tebalu Zuwade and Abayleh Ayele. Koech led forcing the pace to the extent that Zuwade and Ayele dropped back, even though the tempo was slowing. After going around the Kralingse Plas, the lake and park where the Rotterdam Marathon has its roots, Kuma picked up enough to drop Koech and Kiptoo.
In the women's race, a leading group of four quickly fronted the race: Japan's Asami Kato, Ethiopia's Marta Tigabea, Peru's Gladys Tejeda and Kenya's Bornes Kitur. Kato and Tigabea led through halfway in 1:12:03 while Tejeda and Kitur were starting to slip back. Kato forged ahead at around 27km, dropping Tigabea, and eventually finishing almost two minutes clear of her nearest challenger. Tejeda ran a tactically astute race to come through well for second place in a personal best. "It was a good race but I'm a bit disappointed with this time," said Kato, despite improving by more than two minutes.
15,000 runners started the race at a runner-friendly temperature of 12°C but a strong south-westerly breeze reached 4m/s.

The 26-year-old Kenyan was in the initial break at 16km, along South Africa's Desmond Mokgobu and Ethiopian Haile Haja, but he went clear.
South American record-holder Ines Melchor made a successful return to the Chilean capital, after finishing second in 2013, by winning the women's race in a new course record. She had only ever run faster in Berlin 2014, when she set the South American record of 2:26:48.

Sisay Lemma won the 32nd edition in windy and relatively warm weather after breaking away at 27km writes Jorg Wenig. He achieved the biggest winning margin in the history of the race, coming home more than four minutes clear. Pre-race favourite and defending champion Getu Feleke, who clocked a course record of 2:05:41 a year ago, dropped out with a muscle injury just before 17km. At halfway (1:03:07) only Lemma, Kenyan debutant Suleiman Simotwo and pacemaker David Kogei remained. When Kogei stepped aside shortly before 27km Lermma surged ahead and dropped Simotwo.
The women's race was much more competitive. Maja Neuenschwander and Ethiopia's Fate Tola broke away from a group of seven just before 15km. They went through halfway together in 1:13:35, 34 seconds ahead of a group consisting of Anna Hahner, Agnes Mutune, Esther Chemtai and Caroline Chepkwony. Tola, back after childbirth, started to falter at 29km after the last pacemaker dropped out leaving Neuenschwander on her own for the last 10km. But she was being chased and at 35km her lead was down to 17 seconds with Chemtai leading the charge. The 35 year-old Neuenschwander, who has a personal best of 2:29:42, had enough left to hold on for the win. "The wind was the problem, otherwise I would have run faster," she said, admitting that she had hoped to improve on the Swiss record of 2:27:44.

31 year-old Kenyan Chesari Jacob prevailed over Chala Bekele in the final kilometre. Algeria's national marathon record holder Souad Ait Salem built a big lead during the second half to win easily. The 36 year-old missed the course record by just 14 seconds. Including all events on race day the HAJ Hannover Marathon had a record entry of over 20,000 runners.
A lead group of 15 runners including three pacemakers reached halfway in 64:08, just inside course record pace. However once the pacemakers dropped out at 25km the pace slackened for around six kilometres with nine runners still in contention. "There was no one pushing and it turned tactical," said Jacob. He then surged ahead around 32km, splitting the group to lead by five seconds at 35km. Bekele caught him at 40km and briefly took the lead but Jacob responded: "I knew I had something left and was confident that I would win" he said.
Ethiopians Kidist Tedla, Ayantu Hailemaryam and Aynalem Woldemichael, defending champion Souad Ait-Salem and Kenyan debutante Maryanne Wanjiru passed 10km in a brisk 34:26. Before reaching halfway Wanjiru dropped out and Tedla and Hailemaryam did later on. With a 1:12:55 half way split only Salem and Woldemichael were left at the front and the Ethiopian dropped back between 25–30km. "During the final 2km I had a cramp in my calf," said Ait Salem, who slowed but still clocked her second best marathon time. "I was not aware that I was that close to the course record so late on."

19 APRIL 2015: 13th ZURICH MARATHON, SWITZERLAND
Yoshiko Sakamoto had no rival in the women's race. She took the lead soon after the start and increased it to almost eight and a half minutes by the finish. Behind her Nicola Spirig carefully paced herself to the best Swiss performance of the day. After dropping to fifth place at times the Olympic triathlon champion posted the fastest time for the final kilometre and moved up into second place.
The men's race was tactical. A lead group of 10 (in which Yuki Kawauchi was the only non-African) held together all the way to 35km. Edwin Kemboi Kyeng then made the decisive move: "no one showed any interest in taking charge (so) I decided to go... and I managed to drop the others." Behind him Kawauchi had descended to a lowly 7th place before he upped his pace and managed to move up to second in the final 2km with Gebre Mekuant Ayenew only three seconds behind.

20 APRIL 2015: 119th BAA BOSTON MARATHON, USA
Leslisa Desisa regained the Boston crown he won in 2013 while Caroline Rotich scored the biggest win of her career writes Parker Morse.
Desisa hadn't won a marathon since his victory two years ago in Boston. After his runner-up finish in Moscow, Desisa did not finish Boston in 2014, and then lost a close duel with Wilson Kipsang in New York City last autumn and filled yet another second place in Dubai this January.
With overcast skies, occasional rain and an occasional headwind nobody wa nted to lead. Desisa just stayed in contact, amid a lead pack of more than a dozen, until late in the race. Ten men crested "Heartbreak Hill" together, and but then the pack thinned to three: 2012 champion Wesley Korir, Desisa and Ethiopia's Yemane Tsegay. Korir soon fell back to eventually finish fifth while Tsegay hung on longer, closing the gap on Desisa more than once but unable to get away. Desisa became the third Ethiopian man to won the Boston Marathon in this century and the first to win a second time.
Rotich left her victory much later as yet again the women's race came down to the final strides on Boyleston Street. Buzunesh Deba dropped back with a kilometre to go but Rotich had to burn off Mare Dibaba in the final metres. As Dibaba faltered Rotich stole a somewhat flattering victory margin of four seconds. Dibaba, the current world leader with her 2:19:52 run in Xiamen, admitted: "I was confident that I could win, but at the end I saw I would have to settle for second."

41300 runners took part in the 30th edition with Nick Van Peborgh winning the 10 Miles in a new record. The very first edition in 1986 drew 800 runners. The marathon runners started first at 9:00. Florent Caelen headed the 2450-strong field in a new course record which met the Rio de Janiero Olympic qualifying standard.
After a brief rain shower Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever started the 10 mile event at 15.00, setting 29,000 runners off in three waves. Around 100,000 spectators lined the streets of Antwerp to cheer them on. Nick Van Peborgh took control of the race for his fourth victory. Only Kim Ruell and Jeroen Hendrikx managed to follow but they had to let Van Peborgh go before entering the Waaslandtunnel.

26 APRIL 2015: ROCK 'N' ROLL MADRID MARATHON, SPAIN
Ezekiel Kiptoo Chebii successfully defended his title, but rain and chilly conditions kept times slow. Last year Chebii had lowered the course record on the undulating circuit to 2:09:15. He became only the second man to win back-to-back titles since the race was inaugurated in 1978.
Uganda's Thomas Ayeko paced a 12 runners through the opening 10km in 31:16 and seven through halfway in 1:05:26. He dropped out after 25km Kiptoo pushed the pace for much of the next 10km. Five were still together at 35km but Kiptoo always looked the strongest and soon afterwards broke away. Wosen Feleke Demise hung on until 39km and Kipchirchir Koech didn't let go until 2km from home.
Monica Jepkoech sprinted away from Spain-based Ethiopian Marta Tigabea in the last 500m the latter coming home three seconds in arrears. Six women went through halfway in 1:16:57 with Jepkoech, Rose Jepchumba and Selly Korir for Kenya against the Ethiopian trio of Tigabea, Meseret Legese and Abebech Bekele but the group reduced to three by 32km.
The Kenyan pair of Silas Muturi and Emmanuel Bett looked on course for a fast time in the associated half marathon until the official car guiding the leaders took the wrong route and the pair ran an additional 600m.

26 APRIL 2015: ORLEN WARSAW MARATHON, POLAND
Hayle Lemi Berhanu claimed his third win in three marathons in a race in which the top six men finished within 32 seconds writes Pawel Jackowski.
More than a dozen runners passed 10km in exactly 30:00 and halfway in 1:03:31. The only European among them was the Polish record holder Henryk Szost. After 30km (1:30:47) the group began to break up, with seven left to contest the race. Of these six were still together at 40km point. With a kilometre to go Berhanu broke away, apparently little troubled by the competition.
In the women's race Fatuma Sado broke the course record by nearly two minutes. It was down to five by 10km and the same quintette passed halfway in 1:14:00. From there the pace steadily increased until by 30km it was Sado against Mercy Kibarus. They were still together at 35km but with 5km to go Sado started to build a lead which by 40km had grown to 17 seconds. She pressed on to the finish to set a new course record and Polish all-comers record, but fell 46 seconds short of her personal best.
