6 SEPTEMBER 2014: BIRELL PRAGUE GRAND PRIX, CZECH REPUBLIC
Photos: Birell Prague Grand Prix
Geoffrey Ronoh countered every move that Geoffrey Mutai made to win in warm, humid conditions — smashing the course record with the second fastest time in the world this year. Mutai finished four seconds behind as six men broke 28 minutes. Coretti Jepkoech also ran a course record, second fastest time of the year, and a personal best, to win the women's title.
The Mayor of Prague, Tomas Hudecek, fired the gun at 7:30pm to set 5500 runners on their way from Wenceslas Square, but it soon became chasing the tale of the two Geoffreys. Mutai led as 5km was passed in 13:19, inside world record pace. With 22 minutes on the clock Ronoh was in front by a couple of metres and the gap grew as they charged over one of Prague's many bridges. The advantage was three seconds and Mutai never looked like closing the deficit.
Correti Jepkoech didn't feel much pressure from her rivals after she drew away from Esther Chemtai over the second half of the race. The 20-year old led the entire race, to finish 55 seconds inside the course record from the inaugural women's race last year.

14 SEPTEMBER 2014: USTI NAD LABEM HALF MARATHON, CZECH REPUBLIC
Despite strong rain and slippery streets the winning times Adugna Tekele and Coretti Jepkoech were only seconds slower than the race records (1:00:38 and 1:09:07). A lead group of eight men ran together for the first half of the race, passing 5km in 14:09 and 10km in 28:30.
The small hills and strong rain before 15 km again took their toll, and the pace slipped further to 43:08 at 15km and they were now down to five runners. In the final 3km first Azmeraw Bekele and then Geoffrey Kusuro, found themselves unable to match Takele's surges.
Four Kenyans formed the lead group in the women's race, along with the Ethiopian teenager Kumeshi Sichala. They passed 5km in 16:07 but by 10km Jepkoech had gained a 20-second lead over the chasing group of comprising Helah Kiprop, Esther Ndiema, and Flomena Chepchirchir while Sichala had dropped some 41 seconds further back. Jepkoech widened the gap and, although she was noticeably struggling during the final 3 or 4km, she won by over a minute.

Bad weather forecasts kept entries down but the weather turned out to be perfect on the day for the 8700 who came to run from 60 nations. In the Half Marathon Daniel Kinjua-Wanjiru ran solo from 8km to post a new course record by 27 seconds. The first Austrian was Valentin Pfeil with a personal best in sixth place.

21 SEPTEMBER 2014: DAM TOT DAMLOOP 10 miles, NETHERLANDS
Photos: Orange Pictures, Karel Delvoye
John Mwangangi won the Dam tot Damloop for the second time, defeating last year's winner Nguse Amlosom (Mwangangi's other victory was in the 2010 race). Linet Masai had an untroubled win in the women's race. Strong winds slowed the times of all runners.
The two leading men broke away after 12km, but the wind did its worst between 10–13km and dashed any hope of really fast times. The lead men then passed Linet Masai, who had started 6:04 minutes earlier with the hope of staying ahead of the men. In Peperstraat the diminutive Mwangangi accelerated to beat Amsolom by two seconds. His winning time was slightly slower than last year, but is still the third fastest time ever run over the 16093.4m course.
Linet Masai broke away from 2012 Olympic marathon champion Tiki Gelana with long, powerful strides after 8km. Hilda Kibet had lost contact with the pair a kilometre before. Masai braved the strong winds on her own, but doing so slowed her. She had previously won this race in 2009 in a time of 50:39 which stands as the fastest on record over this distance.
45,000 runners had entered, making Dam tot Damloop the biggest 10 mile race in the world. Earlier 5000 children ran the Mini Dam tot Damlopen in Zaandam and Amsterdam-Noord. The special 30th anniversary edition was celebrated the night before with the new Damloop By Night, a 4-mile race with 10,000 runners that was spectacularly illuminated by thousands of lights. Next year's Dam tot Dam events will take place on 19–20 September.

21 SEPTEMBER 2014: MIZUNO SIBERIAN INT'L MARATHON, RUSSIA
A group of three Kenyans got away early on in the 25th anniversary race with John Kiuy content to allow others to lead until a kilometre before the final turnaround point at 30km. He quickly established a big lead which grew inexorably as his compatriots suffered from an over-ambitious start in which three passed through halfway in 65:30. Purity Kimetto also blasted through the first half in 1:14 but despite going ahead of the male runner who had led her up to 28km she slowed soon afterwards and faced a long hard struggle to the finish. Behind her the gap closed up but she had a sufficient lead to stay ahead until the finish line.

21 SEPTEMBER 2014: BLACKMORE'S SYDNEY RUNNING FESTIVAL MARATHON, AUSTRALIA
More than 34,000 people ran and walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to finish lines at the Opera House and Conservatorium of Music in the 14th edition of the Festival. Four thousand competed in the Marathon. An overcast morning created a slick course underfoot for runners from 57 countries as they made their way over four separate courses.
Ethiopa scored wins in both categories in record times, with Women's winner Beruktait Degefa defending her title and improving her own race record by over three minutes. Finishing 10th in the men's race was Olympic bronze and silver medallist Erick Wainaina (Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 — he also finished 7th in Athens 2004).
Race director Wayne Larden said: "lots of international runners; two records broken; and the sun is out. Everyone is happy; it's been a good day."

28 SEPTEMBER 2014: BMW BERLIN MARATHON; GERMANY
Dennis Kimetto broke away from Emmanuel Mutai in the 39th kilometre to set a new world record of 2:02:57. Mutai also ran 10 seconds inside the old record of 2:03:23 set by Wilson Kipsang in last year's Berlin Marathon. Tirfi Tsegaye overtook early leader Shalene Flanagan and held off a late rally from compatriot Feyse Tadese to win the women's race in 2:20:15.
On a day perfect for running four pacemakers led seven men through the first half of the race in 1:01:45. Between 28–30km everyone dropped back other than Kimetto, Mutai, Geoffrey Kwamroror and Abera Kuma. Mutai led through 30km in 1:27:37, thereby slicing a second from Patrick Makau's world record mark set in Berlin in 2011. Kwamroror led briefly through 31km before Mutai took over again, and soon he had drawn clear with only Kimetto for company. As they raced up the Kufurstendamm and on past 35km Kimetto gradually became the lead player and at 38km, before they reached Potsdamer Platz, Mutai could no longer contain him.
Shalene Flanagan steadily built a lead of 22 seconds by 15km, reduced to 18 at halfway (1:09:38). But Tsegaye and Tadese slowly and surely bore down upon her so that by 30km they were just a couple of seconds down. At 35km Tsegaye had a clear 10-second lead over Tadese who was about the same ahead of Flanagan. But at 40km Tadese looked under pressure as Flanagan closed to within four seconds. She rallied in the final stages though, and narrowed the gap on Tsegaye from 23 seconds to only nine, but was never able to challenge for the win.
