6 OCTOBER 2012: IAAF WORLD HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS, KAVARNA, BULGARIA
Meseret Hailu led Ethiopia to an upset victory over more favoured Kenyan team while Zersenay Tadese took his fifth individual title in commanding style, writes Bob Ramsak.
Temperatures along the sunny course that wound through this Black Sea coastal town of 12,000 rose to 30°C (86°F) during the morning's first race, but that didn't seem to faze the unheralded 22-year-old Hailu, who sliced more than two minutes from her previous personal best. She became the first Ethiopian woman to win at these championships since Berhane Adere in 2002.
In the women's race there was an early breakaway pack of three Kenyans — Paskalia Chepkorir Kipkoech, Lydia Cheromei and Pauline Kahenya — and three Ethiopians — Tadese, Hailu and Emebt Etea — who passed through 5km in 16:13. Kipkoech was prominent at the front of the group for most of the time, and after passing 10km in 32:21, Kahenya and Etea started to drop back. Only after 20km did Lydia Cheromei lose her place in the lead group and in the final kilometre the longtime leader, Kipkoech, was overtaken by the two Ethiopians who tussled all the way down the finish straight until Hailu edged ahead just before the line.
Given hot and humid conditions it was surprising that Tonya Nero ran a Trinidadian national record of 1:15:11 in 27th place.
Running at the front from 5km, Zersenay Tadese romped to a 32-second win and returned to top of the podium after a runner-up finish in Nanning two years ago halted his streak of four successive titles. Flight delays had forced the Eritreans to spend a night in Vienna Airport before arriving only 20 hours before the race.
Kenyan Philemon Limo led a tight pack of 30 runners through 5km in 14:22, but then Tadese moved to the front. Limo and his teammate Eliud Kipchoge and Pius Kirop stayed with him for a short time but with less than 25 minutes on the clock, Tadese surged again to pass through 10km seven seconds ahead. Tadese covered the second 5km in 13:45, one of the fastest splits ever in a Half Marathon. At 15km (42:16) Tadese was 29 seconds ahead of Kirop while John Mwangangi was a further eight seconds down and Limo faltering after his fast second 5km split spent chasing Tadese.
Deresse Chimsa came through strongly at the end to take second. Although he could not claw back any of Tadese's advantage, he broke his personal best by a wide margin. The next four spots went to Kenya, with Mwangangi leading the Kenyan squad to a sixth straight team title.
The next edition of the Championships will be held in Copenhagen in March 2014.

7 OCTOBER 2012: KOSICE PEACE MARATHON, SLOVAKIA
In nearly ideal weather conditions (15°C, cloudy, no wind, slight rain) the 89th edition saw both course records and a new participation record achieved (7400 in all races from 46 countries) writes Alfons Juck. The top four men broke the previous course record of 2:08:33 set by Gilbert Chepkwony in 2010. Lawrence Kimaiyo blitzed the last 6km to improve his only previous marathon time of 2:11:46 in Turin in 2010 by nearly five minutes, running almost equal splits of 1:03:54 and 1:03:57. Pre-race favourite Evans Ruto followed Kimaiyo after 30km but eventually lost the battle for second by fractions of a second. Kimaiyo's winnings of 15000€ would have increased to 20000€ if he had run two seconds faster. Defending champion Elijah Kemboi came in fourth but with a three-minute improvement of his personal best. Kosice witnessed its best performances ever with six sub-2:10 times.
Race favourite Hellen Mugo started very fast in the women's race and passed halfway in 1:12:12. She later faded but still managed to creep under the 2:30 barrier, the first time ever in Slovakia (the previous course record was 2:30:50). Both defending champion Maryna Damantsevich and third-placed Ehitu Kiros Reda ran new personal best times.

14 OCTOBER 2012: DE LAGE LANDEN EINDHOVEN MARATHON, NETHERLANDS
Kenya's Dickson Chumba won the 29th edition in a course record of 2:05:46, two seconds faster than his compatriot Jafred Kipchumba ran last year over the fast two-lap course in the Dutch city writes Phil Minshull. He also improved his personal best by nearly two minutes.
Halfway was reached in 1:02:57 by a pack of 14 men. Chumba attacked just before 29km, moving away from a nine-man lead group which then fragmented. His split at 35km was 1:43:31 and he looked on course to go under 2:05 but he tired badly over the final 3km. Franklin Chepkwony broke away from a three-man chasing group just after 35km to come home second in 2:06:11, an improvement of nearly five minutes on his previous best. Fast-finishing Eric Ndiema, still only 19, has run his first three marathons all under 2:07 and in the space of less than 12 months, his fastest being the world junior best of 2:06:07 when finishing third in Amsterdam in November 2011 and his slowest being 2:06:37 for fourth in Paris this year. As in 2011, nine men went under the elite benchmark of 2:10.
Ethiopia's Aberume Mekuria won the women's race in a personal best 2:27:20, having run with local favourite Miranda Boonstra until just after 35km. The Dutch runner, now 40, finished second in 2:28:18.

Ethiopian Mohammednuri Abdela won the 4th edition with Zeineba Hayato leading the women's race home and both setting new course records for the four-lap city centre route that has the unique finish in the 6000 seat Roman amphitheatre built in 177 AD. Jordan's first Olympic marathoner, Methkal Abu Drais placed third in the event while Razan Muqbel set a new national women's record of 3:35:09.
The event attracted over 450 international runners from 64 countries. Across all events the day saw over 7000 participants out on the streets of the Jordanian capital. In addition to wheelchair and visually impaired categories, many of the competitors raise funds and awareness for charities with the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Centre being primary beneficiaries of the race.

21 OCTOBER 2012: TCS AMSTERDAM MARATHON, NETHERLANDS
Both course records were beaten in the 37th edition: Wilson Chebet improved the old record by 3 seconds; Meseret Hailu sliced almost a minute off the women's record. Michel Butter became the third-fastest Dutch Marathon runner ever.
The race was decided after 35km at which point there were still nine runners in the lead group. Peter Kirui, one of the favourites, was the first to go ahead, but after 39km Chebet showed that he had the best legs and left the competition behind. After the huge welcome for Chebet, the crowd exploded when Michel Butter came into the Olympic Stadium. The 27-year-old was hugely relieved to break 2:10. He did well to pick up the pace in the last 7km while running alone (without pacemakers).
The party atmosphere redoubled when Meseret Hailu posted the new women's record, surpassing the time of Olympic Champion and training partner Tiki Gelana. After taking the world half marathon title on 6 October the 22-year-old Hailu improved her marathon best by no less than six minutes.
No less than 38,000 runners entered for the various distances (marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon, 8km and children's runs). That was 5,000 more than last year. With 13,000 marathon runners, the TCS Amsterdam Marathon is the biggest marathon in the Netherlands and is fast becoming one of the largest marathons in Europe. There were 15,000 registrations from abroad from 82 nationalities.

21 OCTOBER 2012: DONG-A ILBO GYEONGJU INT'L MARATHON, KOREA
The 6th edition proved the best yet writes Mirko Jalava. The race only includes an international men's race and has only seen African winners with Kenya taking the first two titles and Ethiopia following with the next two.
Last year's surprise winner Wilson Loyanai returned with a vengeance to defend his title and smashed Ethiopian Yemane Tsegay's 2:08:52 course record from 2009 by more than two minutes. He led four runners under the old record and a total of seven under 2:10.
When the leaders reached 15km in 45:30, there were still almost 20 runners in the pack. The pace continued evenly through 25km (1:16:23) and 30km (1:31:34), but then Loyanai made his decisive move. With a 14:33 split to 35km the change of pace scattered the pack. Loyanai was streets ahead at the finish but Boniface Mbuvi just beat Moses Kurgat in the final sprint both with personal best times.

21 OCTOBER 2012: MEDIO MARATON VALENCIA TRINIDAD ALFONSO, SPAIN
Joel Kemboi Kimurer, an almost unknown athlete, surprised everybody by winning in 59:36 — only six seconds outside Geoffrey Mutai's course record, and leading Kenneth Kipkemoi and John Mwangangi under the hour. It was the first time that three athletes in the same event have run under the hour in Spain. In the women's race Alice Mogire finished 200m clear of her nearest rival, Portugal's Marisa Barros. Mogire ran at a steady pace the whole way (5km: 16:02; 10km 32:32) and was never challenged.
The combination of a great elite field and the qualities of the fast city centre course again produced excellent times. Even with high humidity and a temperature higher than expected (20°C), three men under an hour puts Valencia on a level that only Berlin, Lille and Den Haag have reached this year.
The leading group ran for the record right from the start; passing 5km in 13:46 and 10km in 27:50. As a result the leaders lost their pacemakers before halfway: Kenneth Kipkemoi took over to chase the "under 59 minutes" pledge made the day before. As the sun started to gain strength, John Mwangangi lost contact and the 15km (42:14) and 20km (56:35) split times indicated a course record was beyond reach. Then in the last kilometre the 24-year old Kimurer (with a previous half marathon best of 61:23) pushed ahead of Kipkemoi, a marvelous athlete who lost out in the last metres for the second consecutive year.
Of 9489 who registered, 8449 runners finished.

World record holder Patrick Makau won the 31st edition on a cool bright morning with temperatures struggling to reach 2°C writes Pat Butcher. Makau never looked comfortable at the back of a leading group of 12. He dropped off the back several times but fought back into contention. When Deressa Chimsa shot away from the diminished group of five at 34km, he left Makau 50m in arrears. Makau gradually reeled him back in and took the lead at 39km to finish in the Festhalle greeted by fireworks, cheerleaders and ear-splitting music. "My legs weren't working today," said Makau, explaining his relatively sluggish performance.
A new world record was never in prospect, as the leading group passed through 2km in 6:08 and 10km in 29:56. Makau briefly lost touch with the leaders after halfway (1:02:52). It was now more a question of whether he would finish.
In contrast the leading women always looked well on the way to a new course record as defending champion and record holder (2:21:59), Mamitu Daska headed a group of five, including Marathon debutante Meselech Melkamu, Bezunesh Bekele, and two Kenyans, Georgina Rono and Agnes Barsosio.
Bekele dropped back at 30km but hung on and eventually passed Barsosio to finish fourth. But when Melkamu made her effort at 37km, the remaining trio split up, and Melkamu, running her first race over 10km, went away to an impressive victory which took nearly a minute off Daska's record from last year.

28 OCTOBER 2012: LJUBLJANSKI MARATON, SLOVENIA
Sunny and dry weather before the race changed to 5cm snowfall on race monring and temperatures around freezing writes Tomo Sarf. There was a record number of registrations, most of them for the half marathon but about 1500 in the marathon, but because of the unfriendly weather many changed their minds on race morning, and the record was not broken. Generally numbers are growing from year to year and Ljubljana has one of the highest levels of participation compared to the national population (2 million). The flat course helps to attract marathon runners seeking personal bests.
A strong group of African elite runners had been invited to attack the course record (2:08:25/2011) but the extremely cold weather made for a cautious start. At around halfway Berhanu Shiferaw upped the pace and no one could follow him. He ran the second lap facing the cold and wind alone and considering this recorded a very good time. It was similar in the women's race where none of the invited Africans, paced by Slovenian Olympic qualifier Mitja Kosovelj, could get within five minutes of the record (2:25:24).

The sixth edition suffered winter conditions: constant snowfall and temperatures around freezing point, yet many personal best times were achieved. The medical staff had less to do than ever before. A new record of 10 700 participants entered and 8 500 finished, only 600 less than last year. There were 1635 finishers in the Marathon and 5769 in the half marathon. The seventh edition will be held on 27 October 2013 as the SwissCityMarathon — Lucerne, with an extended course through the historic old town of Lucerne.

Overcast conditions proved a blessing for the runners in the 10th edition writes Mutwiri Mutuota. Wesley Kibet in his third successive race, timed his break to perfection, 2km from the finish and slipped three seconds under Ernest Kebeneoi's mark from last year. He had been locked together with Abraham Keter and Moses Kigen since 33km. In the women's race Salome Jerono ran the last 10km unchallenged.
"I did 2:26 in my first event and improved to 2:19 last year. But today, I surprised myself by winning in a course record." said Kibet. The men's event is yet to witness a repeat winner.
Jerona had the women's race won from 32km and ran solo against the clock to take the victory.

The 19th edition incorporated the Montenego Championships for the 17th time, in both Marathon and Half Marathon. Over 280 runners from 29 countries took part, along with another 1000 in the supporting "eco-race". Many runners had problems because of the heavy rain which fell throughout the competition, although good results were still achieved. The total prize fund was 20,000 euros.

28 OCTOBER 2012: EDP PORTO MARATHON, PORTUGAL
Runners awoke in the race hotel to the sound of wind rattling their windows, and although the morning was cool, bright and sunny the day's times were never going to be fast on this exposed coastal and estuarine course. The first five kilometres were overall downhill and the split of 15:15 flattered to deceive. Even after the coast was reached at 7km the next 7km are out-back northward, within the protective cover of residential blocks and industrial suburbs of Matosinhos. A group of 12 still held together along the esplanade leading towards the Douro Estuary, but James Moiben's pacing, bringing the leaders through halfway in 1:06:07, had reduced the group to five. The second pacemaker finished duty at 25km and then Anthony Wairuri took up the running, rounding the turn point at 27km with a slim advantage over Dadi Tesfaye Beyene and Belachew Alemayahu. The positions remained the same to the finish as Wairuri ran strongly in the testing conditions to record exactly equal splits while all behind him gradually slowed.
The women's race was only decided in the final uphill kilometre as a group of four stuck closely together until that point. Abeba Teklu Gebremeskel proved strongest with little to separate the three who followed her in.

Rain, wind and high tide didn't stop runners in the 27th edition as 5931 finished out of 6214 starters.
The men started cautiously into a strong headwind, passing halfway in 1:08:19. It was not until 35km that Philemon Kipchumba Kisang lengthened his stride and moved away from Titus Kwemoi Masai and Elijah Karanja. The Italian Domenico Ricatti finished strongly, as he crossed the bridges into Venice, to secure fourth place. Karanja remarked: "It was a hard race, especially when crossing the Ponte della Libertà with the rain and the high wind; thanks to the warmth of the spectators I was able to complete".
In the women's race Ethiopians Emebet Etea Bedada and Fantu Eticha Jimma ran side by side until 30km, when Bedada went ahead. As Jimma then faltered Helima Hassen Beriso took the advantage and came through to finish second. Again, it was an Italian who took fourth place, Monica Carlin.
