In the men's race they seized control from the start; in the women's Marily Dos Santos led up to 17km but could not shake off Emily Kirwa, who went on to win. The other notable Brazilian performance was from Cruzeiro Giomar Pereira who, in a "recuperation" race, managed to take the third podium place by overtaking the Kenyan Titus Kibii in the final stages. Elias Chelimo Kemboi was clearly the best man on the day. These were the first Kenyan victories for the men since 2005, and for the women since 2004. Without defending champion Marílson dos Santos, who had run the World Championships Marathon two weeks before, the Kenyans swept all before them. The champion from 2006 and 2007, Franck Caldeira, in eighth, came nowhere near to mounting the podium. In addition there were 400 relay teams and around 2400 children and family members who took part in the 3.5km Fun Run. This year 53 nations were represented among the 1500 runners from abroad. Most of them came from UK, US, Italy, France and Germany. However, there were participants also from far away places, such as Pakistan, Venezuela, Columbia, Japan and Singapore. The race makes its way through the most beautiful parts of the Hungarian capital, crossing Heroes’ Square, along Andrássy Street, past Buda Castle and the magnificent neo-gothic domed Hungarian Parliament building. While crossing the Chain Bridge runners could admire the breathtaking view of the city. The race is a popular event and does not invite elite runners, consequently the winners were Hungarian residents (Erkolo Ashenafi, originally from Ethiopia and Kriaztina Papp). Next year the 25th anniverary edition will be held on 5 September 2010. Most were health runners doing 2.2 or 5.5km but there were also 39 marathoners and 107 half marathoners from seven different countries, making it the smallest capital-Marathon in the world (and Torshavn, with 19,000 inhabitants is the smallest capital worldwide). The course is totally traffic free, and for the half and full marathon runners, heading north after the city loop, hilly and very scenic. It runs alongside the silent and peaceful Kaldbaksfjordur. Surrounded by steep hills covered by a green blanket of grass and dozens of waterfalls, marathoners circumnavigate the inlet until the turn point in the picturesque village of Kaldbak (population 234). Last year's winner Andrias Hansen and his brother Eirikur Hansen managed the only two sub three-hour times. Both are members of the organizing Bragdid–Club in Torshavn, who invest the race surplus in support of their young athletes. Women's course-record-holder Rigmor Arge was a comfortable winner. Last year marathon legend Ron Hill used this lovely, familiar and well organized event to claim the Faroe Islands as his 100th racing country. I followed in his footsteps and ran my 636th Marathon and 86th country. With light winds and a partly cloudy sky conditions were good for fast running. The men's field included three with personal bests below 28:00: Habtamu Awash (ETH, 27:07) Essa Ismail Rashed (QAT, aka Daniel Kipkosgei KEN, 27:21) and Dickson Marwa (TAN, 27:39). Marwa and Awash led a group of six through 5km in 14:07.20. By 8km (22:37) Marwa had a slight lead over Awash and Kenya's Stephen Kiprotich. Although he slowed to 3:03 for the penultimate kilometre he stayed ahead to snatch victory. Jane Kiptoo headed the women's field with a PB of 15:03 ahead of Ida Nilsson (SWE, 15:28). Kiptoo led for the early stages of the race, but couldn't shake off the diminutive Gladys Kerubo Otero. Gladys shot into the lead at around 4km and was never headed. During the Men's 10km the Hilton Cloud 9 Barmen's race waiters faced off against each other over an obstacle course while carrying a tray with cups brimfull with Mattoni water. The winning team represented the Café Klimpt of the Diplomat Hotel. The race grew by 40% to embrace 5650 runners, who experienced the magical atmosphere of running through Prague at night under specially adapted artificial lights. The Tesco Run for Life 3.8km saw 2100 people taking part, running to support the Childhood Cancer Foundation Krtek. The funds raised amounted to 60000 euros. The adidas Women's race 5km attracted 1280 participants, making it the largest ever women's race to be organized in the Czech Republic (or previously Czechoslovakia). This, combined with the participation level in the charity run and the record number of participants in the Metro Men's Race 10km (2260 men, including a number of elite athletes), was a great accomplishment for the city of Prague. Haile still had pacemakers for company and the last of these dropped off at 32km after passing through 30km in a new world record of 1:27:49 (unofficial). Francis Kiprop of Kenya closed to within a minute for second place. The women's race was dominated by Ethiopians in the early stages with a group of four heading the field. Atsede Habtamu stayed the course to win, a half minute inside her personal best, but Russia's Silvia Skvortsova came through strongly to take second, also improving her best time by 33 seconds. Under extremely humid conditions and temperatures hovering around 17°C the 36-year-old finished about 100m ahead of Ethiopia's Chala Lemi, who was also well under the previous record of 2:09:30. "I didn't believe the clock," Mungara admitted, who won a total of CAD $55,000 including bonuses. "I was hoping to run 2:10 here because I was injured in May," he disclosed. "I couldn't go very fast because of my knee injury in Prague. When I was behind I didn't worry. I was going slowly because of my knee." Mungara and Lemi were amongst a group of eight athletes who followed three pacemakers through the early stages passing 10km in 30:04 and the half way point on this pancake-flat course in 1:03:34. Two of the rabbits dropped out at 25km and the third a few more kilometres later — when he slipped on a patch of slick pavement and fell. Lemi and his countryman Gashaw Asfaw, seventh in the Beijing Olympics, tried to break 32-35km, opening a small gap on Mungara. But Lemi was visibly tiring, and looking over his shoulder, which seemed to inspire Mungara as he opened up a winning margin. The women's race also yielded a new course record as 23-year-old Amane Gobena upset the defending champion, Mulu Seboka. Seboka had broken away around halfway by a series of surges, and at one point there was almost 200m separating the pair. Gobena, running only her third marathon, battled back into contention by 39km. Haile Kebebush made it an Ethiopian sweep crossing the line in 2:30:47 for third place. The Ethiopians were greeted at the finish line by the 1980 Olympic 5000m and 10,000m champion Miruts Yifter who is in Toronto visiting his son. Canadian hopes had rested upon Lioudmila Kortchaguina but the 38-year-old Russian-born resident of Toronto twisted her ankle on a streetcar track after only 3km and stopped. The race also raised $1.8 million for various charities. Kogo set his world record in Brunssum (NED) on 29 March this year and earlier in September Peter Kamais, clocked 27:09 in Tilburg (NED). Pre-race favourite Eliud Kipchoge slipped to sixth in 28:11 after keeping pace with the leaders through halfway. In doing so they broke the Kenyan stranglehold that had prevailed since 2002. The 2001 edition was the last occasion when domestic runners won both male and female events. It was also the last time the men's event was won by a Mexican, Alejandro Villanueva. Six thousand runners departed from the majestic Plaza de la Constitución. At 10km, just before entering the Bosque de Chapultepec Mendez escaped from the Kenyan Goerge Kirwa. Passing 10km in 32:52, Mendez gradually extended his lead. Despite his exaggerated head movements Mendez led throughout, and never lost his racing rhythm. As he passed 15km in 49:04 and 20km in 1:05:54 and 25km in 1:22:32. Kirwa fell back, eventually to be overhauled by a compact group of three other Mexican runners. In the women's race Emma Maldonado Carmona had led by almost 800m between 20-25km, but Sanchez ran an intelligent race to overhaul her at 39km and lead a sweep of the podium by home town runners.
