Over all events — Half Marathon (1050), 10.5km (1200), 5km walk (800) and 2km kid's run (700) — almost 4500 participated, from 25 countries. The largest numbers came from Singapore. The first wave of marathoners set off at 04.00, an hour ahead of the main start, to allow four-hour+ runners to avail of cooler conditions. Among those participating were 250 Laguna Phuket staff fundraising to support Ban Klong Sai School in Phang-nga province. Eco-marathoner and advocate of "slow-running" Hajime Nishi ran his 4th Phuket Marathon and his 559th in total. He led a group of interested participants over the course, focussing purely on enjoyment of the race, interaction with spectators and volunteers and taking photos. His winning margin last year was 11 seconds, but this time he had to use all his strength to beat the Mexican Hugo Romero Mendez. They contested the win right down to the final metres with a spectacular sprint to the finish line at the magnificent Fundadores Square. The next three positions were filled by Kenyan runners who beat the brave Mexican team. The race had more than 2000 runners in the streets of San Luis Potosi to enjoy the "most scenic course in Mexico". The race offers a perfect touristic sporting opportunity and attracted runners from US, Kenya, France, Spain, Finland and others, as well as from 22 states of the Mexican Republic. At the finish line runners received a medal designed by artisans from the region, a finisher T-shirt, an anniversary magazine and a copy of Distance Running. Thanks to all the volunteers, public and private institutions, the Tangamanga Marathon celebrated its anniversary as one of the five oldest marathons in Mexico, and with their continued support looks ahead to a promising future. The winners were two Kenyans - Dennis Mwanzia Musau and Lucia Kimani - but Kimani is a Bosnian citizen (BIH). Before a record crowd of spectators Musau dominated, but the women's race was a titanic struggle between Kimani and the Hungarian Krisztina Papp. Lifted by the local crowd support Kimani prevailed and set a new 10km national road race record. Behind her, and behind Papp, Lisa Stubli? also set a Croatian national record. After the race Kimani admitted to being overwhelmed by the result, after having regularly finished in second or third place in her many previous attempts: "This is the most important win in my career yet, because so many thousands of people were cheering for me. I had to win for them" said Kimani. As always, the main race was preceded by children's races in 12 categories, with a total of 5500 participating. The race opening ceremony featured parachutists descending into the start area bearing flags with AIMS and IAAF insignia. In his first attempt Marcos Antônio kept the title at home: not since 2003 has a foreign runner won this race. "It was the most important win of my career." The Brazilian led up to 15km before Willy Kongogo Kimutai and Robert Kiprotich Cheruiyot overtook him. The contest between them went on until 25km on Niemeyer Avenue, after which the two Kenyans opened up an advantage. This lasted until only three kilometres to go, when Marcos Antônio closed back down on them and won in the last metres. "Most amazing is that I heard several people saying that Rio is not hot today" said second-placed Willy Kongogo. On her third attempt Marizete de Paula finally won, after third places in 2000 and 2006. "I am not in my best shape. I just worked to ensure the victory" she said. A 6km Olympic relay event in support of Rio's 2016 Olympic Bid (which proved successful, securing the vote on 2 October) was also held featuring many top Brazilian runners.
