18 AUGUST 2007: GLITNIR REYKJAVIK MARATHON, ICELAND

More than 11,200 people from 40 countries participated in the series of events, which also included a 3km fun run and a series of 1km "Lazy town" age group runs, writes Ian Ladbrooke.

For the title event conditions were good: 12-14°C and minimal wind. Simon Tonui, Mbithi and Jiri Wallenfells broke away from others within the first 2km, passing 10km in 34:25. They remained together until 24km as the Czech slowed considerably over the last third of the race. The two leaders actually increased their pace, and were locked together until the last 800m. Tonui, in his marathon debut, then used his 10km pace to get away from the former Istanbul and Edinburgh Marathon champion.

The Half marathon was more exciting, and the race record of 65:18 looked in danger from the start as a group of five passed 3km in 9:08. The Dane Soren Parlshoj dropped back after 4km as the other four passed 5km in 15:05 and 10km in 30:35. John Mutai and Zachary Kihara led while the young Benjamin Serem was biding his time. At 14km he upped the pace and only the Olympic Marathon champion Stefano Baldini went with him. Redoubling his effort at 17km Serem opened a small gap that he eventually extended to a minute. Both Serem and Baldini broke the previous race record.

Cathy Mutwa had things all her own way in the women's race. She left the very promising young Icelander Nadine Gill at 3km, easing away to win by two minutes. Gill, in second, broke 80 minutes and at age 16 looks a promising hope for the future.

25 AUGUST 2007: XI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ATHLETICS, OSAKA, JAPAN

MEN:

Luke Kibet

Over 500 Kenyans ran under 2:20 for a marathon last year, and most of the world's big city races are won by them, but Luke Kibet's victory was a surprise writes Pat Butcher. This Kenyan team was supposed to be the poorest ever assembled, but 24-year old Kibet turned all that on its head at 31km in the hot and humid conditions. "I heard that people were saying we were not strong," said Kibet immediately after his victory, "but when I came here, I promised myself that I would do well, to prove them wrong."

He left the pack well behind at the start of his 10km surge to run a faster second half and win by over a minute. This was the slowest winning time yet, but starting at 07.00 in 28°C and 81% humidity and finishing in 33°C heat and 67% humidity that is hardly surprising.

Kibet started on the track, specialising in the steeplechase, but took second place in the Enschede Marathon in May 2004 after he joined the management group of Frans Denisen in Tilburg, where Kibet had already won the annual 10 Miles race in 2003. Like many Kenyan athletes, Kibet is theoretically a civil servant (as a member of the Prison Service based in Nairobi) but since his ascent to world class (he also won the Vienna City Marathon in 2:10:07 earlier this year) he only has to do nominal service, and does most of his training back home in Eldoret, where he is mentored by one of the Kenyan Marathon greats, Moses Tanui, at the training camp that the latter set up in nearby Kaptagat. Kibet is married, with one child.

Kibet's best time was set in Eindhoven, where he finished third in 2:08:52, in 2005, the same year that he won the Berlin 25k in 1:13:51. The World Championships win was his eighth Marathon, and apart from the Vienna victory three months ago, he has also won the Taipei Marathon in 2005 and 2006. Considering how well he coped with the temperature and humidity, it is perhaps no coincidence that Vienna was very hot this year, and Taipei has similar climatic conditions to Osaka.

Such is the embarassment of running riches in Kenya, there is another Luke Kibet, eight years older, who is also a marathoner, and who won the Country Music Marathon back in 2004.

Kibet's was the first marathon win for a Kenyan man in the World Championships since Douglas Wakiihuri in 1987.

26 AUGUST 2007: VICTORIA FALLS MARATHON & HALF, ZIMBABWE

An increased field of 360 in all three races, from 14 countries, enjoyed the race in great weather despite the country's current economic problems. The new route, into the National Park and through the high density suburbs, proved very popular with runners, sponsors and spectators alike. Local kids gave great support, and game viewing within the park was an additional attraction.

The Falls were impressive as ever, and crossing the bridge into Zambia was an early highlight for runners. The authorities - Police, Immigration and Customs, the Presidents Office, National Parks, Zimbabwe Tourism etc. - allowed the race to run like clockwork, and officials and volunteers turned out in droves. Sponsors were actively involved in running the waterpoints and Shoprite pulled out all the stops to provide drinks and goodie bags as well as some really loud "running music" and excellent food at the finish.

The "Sunset Cruise" and After Party at the Boat Club rounded off proceedings. Few events finish with elephants swimming in the river, hippos, a spectacular sunset over the Zambezi and rock and roll until the wee hours.

The "putting something back" initiative yielded 10 wheelchairs for the disabled athletes in the town, thanks to the Rotary Club, and some great gifts from runners for the Aids Orphans' Christmas Party. Surplus drinks and snacks went down well locally. The main thing about this race is the community spirit - everyone gets involved.
