5 AUGUST 2006: AFRICA UNIV INT'L PEACE MARATHON, ZIMBABWE

Two Harare residents clinched the top honours this year, each collecting US$2000 in prize money. The men's race was won by 30-year old Tapiwa Chingadayi of the Zimbabwe Prison Services, while the women's top prize went to 27-year old Margaret Mahohoma.

The marathon is now in its fifth year and attracted more than 500 participants from Africa, Japan and the United States. Winners in various categories, including the wheelchair, armed forces, pre-schoolers and senior citizens all received awards.

Sheila Siwela, Zambia's ambassador to Zimbabwe, donated a floating trophy for the marathon on behalf of the Africa Group of Ambassadors resident in Harare. "As ambassadors, we support Africa University and its Peace Marathon because we believe the sporting event is a unifying occasion that cuts across boundaries in politics, culture, age and religion," said Siwela. The ambassador of Mozambique, Vincente M Feloso and John M Gbenah of Ghana were also present.

One of the foreign participants, 37-year old Tomoko Ueta, a marketing executive from Tokyo, flew into Zimbabwe to take part in the marathon. She came in tenth, and was not disappointed: "I didn't really expect to win," she said. "I found the landscape and the people here so good, it's unbelievable. I intend to come back next year and bring my friends and work colleagues with me."

Rukudzo Murapa, the University Vice-Chancellor, said he was confident the AU Peace Marathon would evolve into a global name. "We can do it with your support", he said. The Africa University International Peace Marathon was conceptualized in the year 2002 as an international event to promote sportsmanship, and peace and understanding on the African continent and in the world.

5 AUGUST 2006: SIBERIAN INT'L MARATHON, RUSSIA

The 17th edition of the race welcomed nearly 100 foreign runners from 14 countries to the streets of Omsk. In total 15,000 runners took part in the various events, 750 of them in the Marathon along with three wheelchair participants. They came from Africa to Australia and from 34 regions of Russia. The marathon confirmed its standing as the biggest running festival in Russia.

A modified course took runners over a new city landmark—the metrobridge. AIMS accredited measurer Vladimir Volkov made the precise adjustments on the eve of the race. Greatly increased prize money—up to $50000—attracted the marathon elite from all over Russia.

A new race over 2008m opened the program. MPs, businessmen, deputies, scientists and prominent sportsmen used this event to support Russian Olympians in their preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The favourite runners were Olympic boxing champion Alexey Tischenko and the world record breaking weightlifter Anton Anasenko, but first to finish was Vakin Igor, a deputy-director of the Siberian Running Festival in Novosibirsk.

The race welcomed an elite runner from Kenya, but 26-year old Morris Mwangi dropped out at 13km with a leg injury. The elite Russian runners were left to fight it out, and five-times winner Mikhail Khobotov, below his best form, could only take third place. Newcomer Andrey Yaroslavtsev, used to much shorter distances, was the revelation of the race but could not contain the St Petersburg runner Sergei Lukhin. Lilia Yadzhak won the women's race for the third time.

Awards were presented by representatives of the Omsk Government and the Russian Olympic Committee in a holiday atmosphere that lasted long after the race had finished.

13 AUGUST 2006: THE SUN-HERALD CITY TO SURF 14K, AUSTRALIA

Dickson Marwa

The annual running carnival from downtown Sydney to Bondi Beach attracted 63,541 official entrants, although there are always a lot of people who jump in when the race is underway. For the first time women out-numbered men 31864 to 31677.

For the ninth year running a foreign runner took the title. At his fifth attempt, and after being narrowly beaten into second last year, Dickson Marwa convincingly won this 36th edition. Brett Cartwright did well to take second in his first race for six months, while early favourite Martin Dent repeated his third place of last year in a significantly slower time.

Anna Thompson

Anna Thompson from Victoria strolled to victory in the women's event, with two-time winner Haley Field (nee McGregor) forced to jog the event after a slow recovery from a dog attack on her knee. Third-placed Jessica Ruthe is the daughter of Trevor and Rosemary Wright, UK international marathon runners 25 years ago.

27 AUGUST 2006: HOKKAIDO MARATHON, JAPAN

The extreme north of Japan offers the best conditions in the country for a summer marathon, but it was 31°C at the time of the race, writes Ken Nakamura. Within a year the IAAF World Championships will be held in Osaka, but only the women's race in Hokkaido had any bearing on the selection of the home team. Marathon debutante Kaori Yoshida put herself in the running, winning by a margin of nearly six minutes. She still has to await results in the other four qualifying races in the next six months, but men's winner, defending champion Tomoro Watanabe, must run in one of the three men's qualifying races (Fukuoka, Tokyo or Lake Biwa) to make the team.

Watanabe was aware of this and did not strain himself unduly, winning by two seconds from his teammate Mitsuro Kubota in a slow time. Despite such a close finish the pack had broken up early, with Toshihiro Iwasi passing 5km in 16:15 and already going clear. He led by 53 seconds at 10km and by 91 seconds at 15km. During the middle section of the race the chasing group of four slowly closed the gap, and by 30km they had Iwasi in their sights. At 32km they passed him, but soon after Terumasa Okamura dropped back to leave Watanabe, Kubota and Yusuke Kataoka still contesting. Kataoka lost contact at 40km, but it was not until there were only 50m remaining that Watanabe unleashed his kick. "I like hot weather but it was too hot today," said Watanabe. "It felt hard after it became a three-man race."

Yoshida ran her 13th and 14th kilometres in 3:27 and 3:29 to drop Tomoko Shimokawa and lead second-placed Horie by 16 seconds at 15km, 1:10 at 20km and more than two minutes at 25km. She slowed significantly thereafter (registering 5km splits of 18:14, 18:43 and 19:09) but less so than anyone else did. "I was not nervous about my debut and felt comfortable at the beginning, but perhaps because I was short of training my legs felt heavy towards the end," she said. Masako Chiba, a two-time bronze medallist at the World Championships, finished 11th in 2:48:58 after having declared her retirement as an elite competitor the day before the race.
