4 SEPTEMBER 2005: 20TH NIKE BUDAPEST INT'L HALF MARATHON, HUNGARY
The running season in Hungary reached another peak on the first weekend of September.
After the summer break 6000 runners burst out of the City Park in the 20th Nike Budapest Half
Marathon. Among them were 1350 foreign runners from 44 countries, including an astonishing
450 from the Netherlands. Over 200 Britons and 150 Germans ran. The course goes through the
most beautiful and famous parts of Budapest, along the banks of the Danube and across two of
its bridges. More than 5500 crossed the finish line. The 3.5km Fun Run attracted almost 1000
young runners.
A day before the big event, the Breakfast Run gave people further opportunity for a fun
outing. All the Dutch runners came and transformed the City Park from its usual green into a
sea of orange. One thousand runners ran the 4km route and had a delicious breakfast
afterwards – including orange juice.
This year the race surpassed all previous entry records. The future is bright – orange?

18 SEPTEMBER 2005: 4th INTERNATIONAL GHAZI RUN 9km, TURKEY
The race is run in Istanbul, organised by the War Veterans Association of Turkey and
sponsored by the Turkish National Olympic Committee and the Bakirkoy Municipality writes
Osman Tekin. On a hot and sunny day 279 men and 52 women from five foreign countries
finished the race. William Kimutai Kurgat led until 5km after which Ali Topkara of the
Fenerbahce Sports Club took over and crossed the finish line first.
The women's race looked set to host three elite Ethiopian athletes, Adanech Zekiros Adane,
Letay Negashe Hadish and Trhas Kiros, but their selection for the World Half Marathon
Championships prevented their participation in the Ghazi race. The fight for gold medal was
among the Turkish runners. Binnaz Uslu, European and Balkan Junior Champion, took first place
and prize money of US$2000.

18 SEPTEMBER 2005: TURIN HALF MARATHON, ITALY
Qatar's Nicholas Kemboi missed the course record (1:02:04) by only six seconds. Despite
heavy rain on race day, the men's race was a great example of athletics.
There were great expectations of Kemboi's performance after the incident during the World
Championships 10,000m in Helsinki. He managed to prepare himself for this race with only two
specific training sessions.
After 5km there was a gap of 100m from the lead runners, Joseph Keino, Joseph Ngeny and
Elijah Nyabuti, but by 9km Qatar's adopted runner had bridged that gap. After 13km Ngeny
tried to attack Kemboi, without success. At the same time, Nyabuti suffered a stomach ache
and Keino a pain in the right foot. Both conceded the race.
Entering Valentino Park at 17km, Kemboi delivered his knockout blow: 2km covered in
2:40-2:45. Ngeny had to accept second place.
In the women's race the young Tanzanian, Nkoki Zaitun, in Europe for the first time, beat
the last year's winner Anne Jelagat.
Behind the front runners there were many enthusiasts who, despite the bad weather, ran
along Turin's streets to create a wonderful day of sport. This is the third largest half
marathon in Italy, but with course, the organisation and the potential to become much bigger.
This year 20% of all runners were women, and increasing this figure may be the key to future
growth of the event.

18 SEPTEMBER 2005: MAUI MARATHON AND HALF, USA
Jacob Rotich won his second Maui Marathon in a row, 16 seconds faster than he managed last
year writes Patrice Malloy. Sayuri Kusutani, 46 years old, won her first marathon in 20
starts.
Three men stuck together until 15 miles, when Rotich and Kevin Collins dropped Katushi
Fuchiwaki. Collins, with a pb of 2:15 set in the 2005 world Championships later suffered. He
dropped back from 19 miles, slowed to a walk by 23 miles and then dropped out. Last year's
half marathon winner, Matthew Holden, came through to take third. The bespectacled Rotich, an
MBA graduate, appreciated sharing the pace in the early stages but said that his favourite
part of the race were the hula dancers. "I definitely want to come back next year."
Kusutani was never challenged. "The wind was at my back and it was fun to win" she
said. Last year's winner Jeannie Wokasch finished fifth.
One of the most scenic marathons in the world, the Maui Marathon runs along the Pacific
Ocean through the historic village of Lahaina to finish in Whalers Village in Kaanapaili.
Over 3200 runners from 14 countries and 48 states participated in this year's races.

Starting in the middle of the flat, causeway section of the 12-km long Vasco da Gama Bridge
thousands of runners swarmed up the long slope designed to allow seagoing vessels access to
the upper Tagus estuary. This slowed the runners to start with, and not all could be made up
on the downward slope to the Lisbon side of the estuary. The winners nonetheless recorded fast
times. The second half of the course is on flat, broad roads that surround the Expo 98 site.

25 SEPTEMBER 2005: real,-BERLIN MARATHON, GERMANY
Mizuki Noguchi set a new course record, Japanese record and Asian record in a steady run
under brilliant blue Berlin sky writes Pat Butcher. She was always on course to break
the national record of 2.19.41, set by Yoko Shibui in Berlin last year, and the Asian record
which stood to Sun Yingjie at 2:19:39.
This was Noguchi's first mixed race and she took full advantage of a group of male
pacemakers who accompanied her and the other leading women. It was the sixth successive win
for Japan in the women's race. Home favourite Luminita Zaituc steadily lost ground – more than
a minute every 10km - before having to briefly stop with cramp just a kilometre from the
finish. She finished eight minutes behind Noguchi, but managed to keep ahead of Asale Tafa
who had been with her to halfway but then dropped back. The race was relayed live to Japan,
for late-afternoon prime-time sports viewing.
The men's race extended the Kenyan sequence of victories to seven, with Philip Manyim
powering away from the more fancied trio of Peter Chebet, Jackson Koech and Joshua Chelanga
at 28km. The former 8:20 steeplechaser covered the next 3km in 8:30, so it was little surprise
that he slowed drastically towards the end, although he still improved his personal best.
Behind him, drama played out in the finishing straight as Koech after looking strong only a
kilometre before, lost his co-ordination. Chebet passed him 200m from the finish, to snatch
second, and Koech only just held on for third.

25 SEPTEMBER 2005: SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON & HALF, CANADA
Despite humid conditions Simon Bor ran 2:11:57 to take three minutes off the course record
set last year in one of North America's fastest-growing marathons. Anastasia Ndereba took the
women's race ahead of Britain's Lucy Hasell. Almost 10,000 runners from 30 countries and 40
US states took part in the three events (Marathon, Half and 5km). Of the 2,500 who ran the
marathon, nearly a quarter were international runners.
Kenyans won both marathon races, and took the top five men's places. A pack of nine Kenyans
and two Ethiopians passed through 10km in a speedy 30:45 and reached halfway in 65:15. When
the last pacemakers pulled aside at 27km there were still seven in contention. By 30km
(1:32:48) Bor, Nelson Lebo and Nicholas Murei has spread the rest out in their wake. Just
past 34km, at the final turn for home on the flat lakeshore course, Bor moved decisively
ahead. Lebo looked like he might come back, but Bor finished strongly. Wesley Ngetich, one
of those left behind before 30km, came through to take third.
Anastasia Ndereba had an easier win in the women's race, despite a strong and injudicious
surge to the front by the youthful Victoria Zueva at 15km. Lucy Hasell ran strongly for a
personal best and possible selection for the Commonwealth Games Marathon. A cautious approach
by Tania Jones allowed her to come through to take third place.
In the battle of the ageless titans Canadian phenomenon Ed Whitlock trounced his Dutch
rival Joop Ruter, but could not quite manage to register his fourth sub-3 hour age 70+
marathon, finishing in 3:02:37.
