It is difficult to breathe at 9,000 feet above sea level. But it is even more difficult to breathe at such altitude, when you have been running seven miles at a fast pace. The Colombian athlete Diego Colorado (36 years old) is leading 15,000 runners in the race, but he is almost exhausted…
The city of Quito, the capital of the Republic of Ecuador, nestles high up in the Andean cordillera at an altitude of 2800m. With a population of two million it lies just a few kilometers south of the Equator. Low latitude and high altitude ameliorate each other’s influence and gift the city a mild climate in which temperatures range from 10–25C: just the right range for running. So thought the race founders, 48 years ago, when they launched the “Marathon de los Barrios Quitenos” (Marathon of Quito neighbourhoods).

Cover: Runners in the Moscow Half Marathon held on 2 August. Over 9500 runners finished along with nearly 2500 others in the supporting 5km event. Winners were Rinas Akhmadeev (1:04:24) and Elena Korobkina (1:10:29). Korobkina went on to win the 10km event held in association with the Absolute Moscow Marathon on 20 September in a time of 31:49. Around 9500 finished the Marathon along with another 12,000 in the 10km.
