EDP Porto Marathon – a stunning course in a city with delicious food, friendly people and great wine.

The EDP Porto Marathon is an iconic event that hosts thousands of runners from around the world. Held since 2004, usually in November, the race combines seaside and riverside, a flat and fast course, and passage through three neighbouring cities: Porto, Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia. The EDP Porto Marathon course shows the best of this region. It takes runners through an amazing landscape and the historic centre: Ribeira do Porto, Luís I Bridge and the famous wine cellars of Porto.

Since the first edition with just 317 athletes the EDP Porto Marathon has seen an increase in the number of participants who, each at their own pace, fill the beautiful Atlantic seafront. The race record was set at 2:08:58 in 2021 by Zablon Chumba from Kenya. In 2017 Kenya’s Monica Jepkoech set the women’s record of 2:26:58.

Recent editions have attracted more than 6000 athletes from 75 different countries making the race one of the largest marathons in Portugal. Alongside the Marathon, there is also a 10km Family Race and a Mini Marathon of 6km with over 15.000 runners.

We welcome you to Porto, one of the oldest European destinations which was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1996 and three times voted the Best European Destination in 2012, 2014 and 2017.

Its wealth of monumental and artistic heritage, open-air leisure spaces and cultural life are just some of the reasons to visit this city. There is a lot to see and do in Porto for runners, families and friends.

Don’t forget to try the famous Porto speciality dish, the Francesinha and, of course, the outstanding port wine. Port is a fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Demarcated Region. It stands out from ordinary wines thanks to its range of varieties and the incomparable richness and intensity of its aroma and flavour.

For lunch or dinner we advise you to visit Matosinhos, the ‘World’s Best City for Fish’. The gastronomy of Matosinhos, increasingly appreciated and praised nationally and internationally, is considered one of the main tourist products in the country.

Take the opportunity to spend a few days in the city and enjoy the weather at the beach, by the Douro river or even in one of the city’s public gardens. You can also take a boat ride on the traditional Barcos Rabelos and discover the six bridges that connect Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia.

Join us to celebrate the 18th edition of the EDP Porto Marathon – the best Marathon in Portugal – and enjoy this amazing city.
