We regard it as important to recognise the achievements of distance runners as a way of promoting the sport. The AIMS/ASICS Athlete of the Year Awards were founded in 1992 and continued until 2012. In 2013 these awards were replaced by the “Best Marathon Awards Gala” where nominations put forward are voted upon by AIMS members in the preceding month before the male and female winners are declared on the night of the awards held in Athens (GRE) usually on the second Friday of November.

Children’s Series

The Children’s Series was launched at the beginning of 2006 to assist selected member races to encourage children to run.

After German reunification in 1990 various sports history collections were united in the Berlin Sports Museum. The Museum had officially incorporated the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running in 1994 after Berlin Marathon race director Horst Milde's proposal was approved by the 9th World Congress of AIMS held in Macau. The museum documents the development of distance running and the marathon worldwide.
