1 DECEMBER 2011: ANTARCTICA ICE MARATHON
The world's southernmost marathon, held at Union Glacier camp, attracted 40 runners from 15 countries over all events, which are the only official foot races within the Antarctic Circle on the mainland continent. This year's 7th edition coincided with the Centenary year of man reaching the South Pole. Clement Thevenet (FRA) dominated the men's marathon, leading from start to finish to set a new record in amazingly bright sunshine and temperatures of -18°C.
Yvonne Brown won the women's ahead of two previous North Pole Marathon winners, Emer Dooley (IRL) and Alison Hamlett (GBR). The first three finishers broke the previous female record.
The Antarctic 100km began at 13:00 GMT on 2 December and it took Thevenet only just over 12 hours to establish another new Antarctic record. It was colder, with windchill temperatures dropping down to about -25°C and the prolonged exposure caused two competitors, including Thevenet, to require IV fluids after the race.
In 24-hour daylight Richard Donovan (IRL) ran an epic 100 miles in just over a day to coincide with the Centenary year celebrations.
Next year's event will be from 19-23 November. See www.icemarathon.com.

3 DECEMBER 2011: REGGAE MARATHON, JAMAICA
1300 participants representing 28 countries set off at 5:15 amidst the call of the drums and blazing torches. Among their number were regulars such as the USA's veteran marathon runner and Reggae Marathon aficionado 86-year old Burt Carlson, who has participated in over 300 international events, and 84-year old Jamaican stalwart Roy Thomas who has competed in every Reggae Marathon. Repeat groups like Running Girlz of Canada confirmed that the Reggae Marathon is deserving of being included among the world's best. Horst Preisler of Germany completed his first Marathon in Jamaica and his 1250 Marathon event overall. Local celebrities could also be seen on the course with popular evening jock "Miss Kitty" of Radio Jamaica participating in the 10km along with disc jockey DJ Sparks.
Runners had high praise for special features such as the pre-race JHTA World's Best Pasta Party, the unique start, the heart pounding Reggae music along the course, the overall organization and runner's care, the non-stop entertainment as well as the cool coconut water, fresh from the tree at the finish line. Rupert Green and Kirk Brown were repeat winners in the Marathon and Half Marathon respectively.

Josphat Ndambiri, a sub-27 minutes 10,000m runner, won his debut marathon writes Ken Nakamura. His plan was to move after 30km, but after the pacemakers retired at 25km (1:15:10) he covered the next 5km in 14:32 and ran away from the field. Only James Mwangi tried to follow and had a solitary chase for the rest of the race. Ndambiri slowed dramatically after 35km, and admitted that in his first marathon "I was not so sure how to run the race". He competes for the Kormori Corporation in Japan after graduating from school in Japan.
In the race to make the Japanese Olympic team, Yuki Kawauchi bided his time after halfway behind Dmitriy Safronov but after 30km they both picked up. Kawauchi left Safronov after 35km to chase after Masato Imai and Kazuhiro Maeda, who were battling to be the first Japanese. He caught them at 36.5km. For the next 2km Imai responded to the challenge, while Maeda was left behind. Kawauchi and Imai took turns in their attempt to break away from each other. Kawauchi made the decisive move at the 38.5km aid station. Imai worked his way back in the next kilometre, but Kawauchi surged again to leave Imai behind for good.
The Japan AAF was quite impressed with Kawauchi's gutsy run but his time was not exactly what they were looking for. "The Japanese all slowed down and none of them ran close to 15 minutes in any of the subsequent 5km segments," said Sakaguchi, the head of the men's marathon department. But Kawauchi admitted that Fukuoka was a warm up for February's Tokyo Marathon, another Olympic qualifying race and his primary goal. Such a strategy, by the winner of one Japanese Olympic trial, is previously unheard of.

4 DECEMBER 2011: STANDARD CHARTERED SINGAPORE MARATHON
With a record-breaking 65,000 runners starting at three different start points in the early morning, Kenya again dominated the Marathon contests with 35-year-old Charles Mwai Kanyao winning the men's title, and Irene Jerotich Kosgei, retaining her crown in the women's race.
It was Kanyao's first major marathon win, after having entered himself in the race independently. He said "It is not easy. I trained very hard for this, and I am glad I came here and won."
Kosgei said, "At 35km I took the leap. I did the same thing last year. I am familiar with the course, and I knew which bits were hard to run, and which were easy."

18 DECEMBER 2011: FUBON TAIPEI MARATHON, CHINESE TAIPEI
Both winners broke the previous records. The marathon took place along Taipei's riverside paths and the flat terrain was favourable for fast times. Adhane led the pack over the entire course to beat Luke Kibet's 2006 course record by 41 seconds. Delayed at immigration, Adhane's recovery time from the journey was curtailed. Kirop broke the 2009 record set by Yeshi Esayias Tesemma of Ethiopia by 2 minutes and 29 seconds.

Tariku Bekele (the brother of Kenenisa) dominated the race in his first visit to Brazil, giving Ethiopia its second win in the iconic event (Kenya's total stands at 12). He dismissed the effects of the heavy rain that fell throughout the race: "It's not difficult [to run in the rain]" he said. Priscah Jeptoo won the women's race by a margin of four seconds, after a hard-fought battle with 2008 winner, Ethiopia's Wude Ayelew. In doing so she improved the old course record set last year by 91 seconds.
