With a runaway victory Abel Kirui became the third athlete to retain a World Championship Marathon title writes David Martin. Kirui made his presence first felt by leading through halfway in 1:05:07, before surging on to win by the biggest ever margin (2:28).
Kirui had only been selected for the Kenyan team after others withdrew, but stamped his authority on the race by making a decisive break around 27km. He ran the 5km from 25-30km in a record 14:17 split to lead Eliud Kiptanui and Feyisa Lilesa by 11 seconds. He then went on to run the next 5km in 14:40, increasing his lead by over a minute to 1:14, now over fellow Kenyan Vincent Kipruto. Kipruto never threatened and was continuously looking behind although not appearing distressed. With victory assured Kirui slowed slightly for a final 5km split of 15:15, passing 40km in 2:00:38 as behind him Kipruto edged clear of Lilese.
Morocco's Abderrahime Bouramdane had been dropped when the pace increased at 25km but came back through to take fourth place. The highest non-African placing was Hiroyuki Horibati's seventh, although his teammate Yuki Kawauchi had led the huge lead pack through 5km in 15:58. Nicholas Kiprono then took up the lead as 30 runners passed through 10km in 31:21 and he was still in the front rank when Kirui made his decisive move.
Lilesa became the youngest ever medallist but Ethiopia failed to finish a team. Pre-race favourite Gebre Gebremariam dropped out after 12km as did the highly rated Chala Dechase and Bazu Worku. Kenya took the team race ahead of Japan and Morocco.

Markus Hohenwarter put up a commanding performance on the flatter first section as well as on the steeper parts and scored a start-to-finish victory. British runner Huw Lobb took second place with Robert Krupicka from the Czech Republic making a strong finish to come in third. Aline Camboulives from France was the first-placed woman in front of two Swiss.
4206 runners lined up at 09:00 in Interlaken for the start signal from European Marathon Champion Viktor Röhtlin. The route led from Interlaken up to Kleine Scheidegg, a height gain of 1800m. Some 30,000 spectators followed the race in Interlaken and along the route, enjoying wonderful weather.
Measured by the number of participants, the Jungfrau Marathon is the world's biggest mountain marathon. Next year, two marathons will be held to mark the 20th anniversary of the event and so twice the number of starting places will be available. The double event will take place on 8-9 September 2012. The World Championship Long-Distance Mountain Running event will also be held within the event.

10 SEPTEMBER 2011: MATTONI PRAGUE GRAND PRIX
A minute's silence was held before each of the races led by the Czech footballer Pavel Nedved, in tribute to the three national ice hockey players who died in a plane crash earlier in thew week. Despite such a sad start, the race was a huge success.
Philemon Limo was quickly into the lead alongside three others, with two groups of four hard on their heels. By 3km Limo, had broken away with Henry Chirchir and Adugna Tekele. He won in 27:34, smashing the course record by nearly thirty seconds.
The adidas Women's Race 5km, started an hour and a half earlier at 19:00, was much more straightforward. Race favourite Priscah Ngetich was never challenged for the lead. By 4km she was clear of the field and looked as if she might even break the course record. In the end she was just two seconds behind the 2002 event record.

Leonard Patrick Komon broke the course record and was just four seconds short of the world best time.
Komon led from the beginning. At first Samuel Tsegay from Eritrea and the Kenyan John Mwangangi were able to follow him, but after 20 minutes they had to let him go. After 10km Komon was 15 seconds under the schedule of the world best time, but after 40 minutes Tsegay got back to him. Komon had enough energy left to get away again and ran on to claim the victory and course record (previously 44:45 to Paul Koech in 1997). Komon afterwards said that it was the heavy rainfall at the last 1.5 km that prevented him from improving Haile Gebrselassie's world best time.
As a track athlete Priscah Jepleting was a surprising winner in the women's race.

18 SEPTEMBER 2011: BLACKMORE'S SYDNEY RUNNING FESTIVAL, AUSTRALIA
The Blackmores Sydney Marathon was run in unseasonably warm conditions with 30 degrees greeting runners on a beautiful sunny morning.
Over 1,500 international and 33,500 local participants registered in the event which included the full Blackmores Sydney Marathon, a Half Marathon, 9km Fun Run and 4km Family Run all taking participants over the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the finish line on the World Heritage site of the Sydney Opera House.
The marathon had 3,754 people take part with a small elite bunch which saw Joel Kiplimo Kemboi from Kenya quickly assert himself aided by Oswold Revelian from Tanzania. They were closely followed by four time winner Julius Maratim (Kenya), Mike Aish (USA) and Takaki Mori (Japan). The women's field was quite strong with Letay Hadish from Ethiopia, Margaret Mjuguna (Kenya) and Gabrielle O'Rourke from New Zealand vying for line honours.
The half marathon event incorporated the Australian Championships which saw four time Australian Olympian Lee Troop on the comeback trail in preparation for a final assault on qualifying for his 5th Olympic Marathon in London 2012.

18 SEPTEMBER 2011: USTI HALF MARATHON, CZECH REPUBLIC
This new race in the Czech Republic debuted with some very fast times. Several athletes who have appeared in other races promoted by the Prague International Marathon supported the event, including Prague Half winner Philemon Limo. From the gun he went to the front alongside Henry Chirchir and Adugna Tekele. In the sixth kilometre Limo and Tekele put 50m between the two of them and Chirchir, and within another two kilometres Limo had set sail for home. At one point in the race Limo was on target to crack one hour, but running on his own in the rain he did slow slightly finishing just under 61 minutes and nearly three minutes ahead.
In the women's race a group of four ran together close to the second group of men until nearly halfway through the race. Soon after 10km Agnes Kiprop broke away from the chasing Tadelech Bekele and Justina Heslop, and they stayed in this order to the finish.

25 SEPTEMBER 2011: 38th BMW BERLIN MARATHON, GERMANY
The 38th BMW Berlin Marathon lived up to all expectations, with Patrick Makau (KEN) setting the seventh world record in 13 years in the event writes Pat Butcher. Makau first broke Haile Gebreselassie, then took the Ethiopian legend's world record with 2:03:38.
One of the pacemakers, Stephen Chemlany, hung on to finish second.
Gebrselassie, who stopped in discomfort when Makau surged away, recommenced and briefly reclaimed second place, but eventually dropped out after 35km.
There was another Kenyan success in the women's race. Florence Kiplagat, the 2010 world half marathon champion, who had dropped out of her only previous marathon, in New York last autumn, was never headed. World record holder, Paula Radcliffe, returning from childbirth and a barren two years competitively, stayed with Kiplagat for 12km, before gradually dropping away. Kiplagat won by almost as big a margin as Makau, in 2:19:44. Radliffe was passed by the steady starting local hero, Irina Mikitenko at 33km, and the German went on to take second place.

In ideal conditions, the leaders of the 1800-strong field went through 11km in 34:30 halfway in 1:06:10. Amos Maiyo, who has been a pacemaker in the Berlin, Amsterdam and Rotterdam marathons, was clear by 32km, and opened a gap of almost 2 minutes by the time he hit the line, setting a new personal best to take home the R25000 purse. Regular Cape Town Marathon runner Raphael Segodi recorded the fastest second half of the day as he came through from four minutes down at halfway.
