3 JULY 2011: AIRPORT GOLD COAST MARATHON, AUSTRALIA
The men's course record was broken after 22 years in a race which drew a record 24,726 runners (over 5000 in the Marathon and 9000 in the Half). Nicholas Manza lowered Brad Camp's 1989 mark by 10 seconds. Winners took $10,000 each but Manza missed the $25,000 sub-2:10 bonus, although he was presented with a consolation course record bonus of another $10,000.
From halfway Matebor and Manza audaciously broke away from the pacemakers to led a group of eight runners. At 36km Manza made his winning move, to forge a 50m lead in the next kilometre. Lee Troop, hampered by hamstring trouble, failed to post a London 2012 Olympic qualifying time and came sixth in 2:15:45. Tesema, who was determined to break 2:30, had to run solo for most of the race. Far behind her Roxie Fraser improved her personal best by over a minute after climbing from fifth place at halfway.
The race action was played out in front of an Africa Region delegation on the Gold Coast to inspect the city's suitability to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The delegation comprised 14 National Olympic Council presidents, two secretary generals and two Olympic committee board members.
Race director Cameron Hart commented: With the Commonwealth Games delegation from Africa here to assess the event, we feel we've done all we possibly can to give the 2018 Commonwealth Games bid a boost.

30 JULY 2011: SWISSALPINE MARATHON DAVOS, 78km
Jonas Buud won his fifth consecutive Swissalpine while Lizzy Hawker followed up her 2006 and 2007 wins writes Anita Fuchs. Buud's latest win was his slowest over the extremely tough 78km course from Davos to the Keschhütte (2632m) and on to the Sertigpass (2739m) and returning to the start. He displayed more battle scars than ever, with bloody abrasions on both knees, arms and hands. First he fell on the descent from the Keschhütte in his pursuit of Huw Lobb, who had been the first over, leading by 87 seconds. After passing Lobb he fell while running down the Sertigpass.
As previously Budd created his victory on the 5.4km section between the two highest points of the world's biggest mountain ultra-marathon, gaining more than 4.5 minutes on Lobb. Over the remaining 20km the 37-year-old from Mora gradually extended his lead to win by 17:37. Bruno Heuberger, who lives in St Margarethenin Thurgau and came fourth as the best Swiss runner on Saturday was in a podium position up to 3km from the finish but then ceded to Japan's Kaburaki Kaburagi.
In the women's race Lizzy Hawker set the pace from the beginning and was more than 3.5 minutes ahead by halfway, ultimately extending her winning margin to 11:29. Kajsa Berg, a compatriot of Jonas Buud, was already 20:28 behind in third place. Based in Scuol, 35-year-old Hawker has fought many exciting battles for a podium position with Davos's Jasmin Nunige, to whom she dedicated her win. Nunige could not contest the longer distance for health reasons. They are now even on wins, with Hawker holding the course record of 6:30:12 from 2006. Nunige won in 2005, 2008 and 2010, and this year fired the starting gun before winning the Half Marathon event later in the day. Overall, 5382 runners from 62 nations participated in the eight categories.
