4 DECEMBER 2010: REGGAE MARATHON, JAMAICA
A record field of nearly 1,200 runners from 29 countries took part in the 10th edition, with local favourites Rupert Green and Elizabeth Mondon taking top honours. Defending champion Green took the lead early, but Mondon ran a slow tactical first half before pushing ahead of last year's women's champion, Terry Refjimbal, to finish in a personal best. A Frenchwoman, Mondon lives in Kingston and is a member of the Jamdammers Running Club, giving the hosts of the Reggae Marathon their first victory in ten years.
At the start the excitement generated by the torchbearers and drummers took the runners' minds off the light rain. The skies eventually cleared and the temperature remained a cool 23°C for most of the race. The route took runners along the Negril coastline and ended at the Long Bay Beach Park, where runners poured unto Negril's famous seven-mile white sand beach to enjoy post race massages and a swim. The race boasts an even mix of local and international runners. President of the Jamdammers Running Club, Emile Leiba, said "We're proud of creating and sustaining a world class event that promotes local running and brings visitors from all over the world to Jamaica."

5 DECEMBER 2010: STANDARD CHARTERED MARATHON SINGAPORE
Kenneth Mungara and Irene Jerotich Kosgei triumphed in warm and humid conditions. "The race is good but very hot," said Mungara, who took home a US $50,000 first place prize. "The first half of the race was quite slow but I broke away at the 30km and I knew that if I maintained my pace, I would win." The women's race saw a close contest as the recently-crowned Commonwealth Games Marathon champion fended off the challenge of Ethiopian Ayelu Lemma Geda by a nine-second margin. "I couldn't run under 2:29.00 because of the humid weather" said Kosgei.
In three events, a record-breaking 60,000 runners took to the streets. Flagged off from three different start points, they pounded past Singapore's iconic landmarks, including Orchard Road, Chinatown, Sentosa, Universal Studios Singapore, Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer. Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. George Yeo was the Guest of Honour for the Marathon, which was flagged off at 05:00 at Orchard Road for the first time as 20,000 runners passed under a flood of Christmas lights. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, flagged off the Half-Marathon at 06:30 where 15,000 runners started the race at the Sentosa Gateway, bringing them through the island of Sentosa and amidst the sights and sounds of Universal Studios Singapore. The 10km, with a field of 20,000, started at 07:45 from the Esplanade Bridge.

Kenyans Barnabas Kiplagat and Bornes Jepkirui extended the Kenyan run of victories in the 12th edition to three years. Edielza Alves Guimarães and Damião Ancelmo de Souza salvaged Brazilian pride with podium places.
Over 12,500 registered athletes started in a close and sunny morning. It was already 25°C at 08:55, when the 22 elite women started. Bornes led from the start and after 9km started to run away from the rest. The men's race fielded 49 elite runners of which 44 were Brazilians. João Ferreira de Lima started strongly but did not last. Giovani dos Santos tried to escape the bunch at 6km but was soon overtaken by the better-prepared Kenyans.

5 DECEMBER 2010: 64th FUKUOKA INT'L OPEN MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS, JAPAN
Jaoud Gharib, 2008 Olympic silver medalist and two-time World Champion, ran away from the field at 15km writes Ken Nakamura. Run in sunny and unseasonably warm conditions, it was the slowest winning time since 2005 when Dmytro Baranovsky won in 2:08:29; second-placed Dmitriy Safronov finished nearly two minutes adrift. In third, Takayuki Matsumiya failed to crack 2:09:30 which would have won him a place in the 2011 World Championships marathon team. Final team selection is made only after the Lake Biwa Marathon in March.
Runners passed 10km in 30:17 and at 15km pacemaker Eliud Kiptanui upped the pace with a 14:15 5km split, breaking up the leading pack. Gharib followed 100m behind Kiptanui through halfway in 1:03:14 but then at half) started to close the gap. They were followed by Kiprono, Tekeste Kebede, Dmytri Baranovskyy and Masato Imai, 30 seconds behind. Gharib went further clear of the chasing pace as he closed on Kiptanui, who passed 30km in 1:29:56 and then dropped out.
Gharib ran on alone to the finish on a course that is completely exposed to the sun and won handily. Behind him, the group had over extended themselves and Safronov, who was seventh at halfway, moved up steadily to second place before 35km. He covered the final 2.195km in 6:41 to smash his personal best by more than a minute and half. Likewise, Takayuki Matsumiya, was not even in the top 10 at 30km but eventually finished third.

15 DECEMBER 2010: 6th ANTARCTICA ICE MARATHON
A record 37 competitors from 19 countries lined up for the world's southernmost marathon and ultramarathon races which took place on mainland Antarctica on 15 and 16 December, respectively.
This sixth edition of the Antarctic Ice Marathon & 100km changed from its traditional location at Patriot Hills to an area known as Union Glacier some 65km away. Operated at approximately 80 degrees south and only a few hundred miles from the South Pole, the events are the only official marathon and ultramarathon races within the Antarctic Circle. Getting the competitors to the start line is always a challenge. Athletes are flown from the southern tip of Chile on a specialist IL-76 cargo plane to land on a blue ice runway. They stay in tented accommodation on a multi-day expedition-style trip.
This year's marathon was delayed by 3 days due to unfavourable flight conditions, but on arrival at Union Glacier runners were greeted by absolutely stunning scenery and the constant daylight that prevails during the Antarctic 'summer'.
Crevasse-checking the course is a very important precaution to ensure runners' safety. The course itself was a 25km loop followed by a 17.2km circuit, on generally flat land surrounded by mountains and hills.
Steve Hibbs (USA), who holds a 2:31 marathon PB in 'normal' conditions, stormed into an early lead over the initial 15km. But he began to suffer in the Antarctic environment and eventually relinquished his lead to Belgium's Marc de Keyser, the 2007 Antarctic Ice Marathon winner. However, in the final quarter a surprise was in store when 33-year-old Bernardo Fonseca of Brazil ran a perfectly judged race to overtake de Keyser, who began to cramp in the soft underfoot snow conditions. Fonseca's time of 4:20:31 established a new record for the race.
In the women's competition, 24-year-old Clare Apps from Great Britain had a convincing win over Denmark's Cathrine Due, the 2008 North Pole Marathon champion, and she set a new record of 4:47:37 in the process.
The marathon was followed by the world's southernmost ultramarathon when six competitors braved it to the start of the Antarctic 100km on 16 December. Temperatures would dip to -18°C as the athletes traversed a 25km loop four times.
Once again, Fonseca prevailed. After running alongside Tommy Yen-Po Chen (TPE) and Alain d'Andria (FRA) over the first 15km, he soon stretched away. Yen Po-Chen, a 2.25 marathoner, and d'Andria, the 2006 Antarctic Ice Marathon winner, could not keep pace as the Brazilian went on to take a notable double. His time of 12:41:52 also established a new record for the 100km race.
Clare Apps (GBR), the previous day's marathon winner, was the sole female participant and reached the finish line in a time of 18:58:19.
Next year's Antarctic Ice Marathon & 100k races are scheduled for the slightly earlier dates of 30th November and 2nd December, respectively.

31 DECEMBER 2010: SAO SILVESTRE 15km, BRAZIL
Double winner of the New York Marathon Marílson Gomes dos Santos took his third victory in the 86th edition writes Eduardo Biscayart. 27-year-old Alice Timbilil repeated her victory from 2009 in a course record beating the 17-year-old mark of Hellen Kimayo by seven seconds.
The men's race started at 2:50-2:55/km pace before Dos Santos, along with the Kenyan contingent took control after 6km. Dos Santos opened up a gap on the rest of the field at halfway and went on to win by 200m. The women had started 15 minutes before the men with Ecuadorian Diana Landi launching the fist attack after only 2km, although this lasted only until 4km when Timbilil accelerated away from the two Brazilians that were running with her, Simone Alves da Silva, and Cruz Nonata da Silva. Timbilil's superiority was undeniable, but after opening a gap of 60m, she was pushed by Simone de Silva over the final stages.
