The Gbarnga Marathon Foundation proudly welcomes the global running community to one of West Africa’s most promising endurance events.
The Gbarnga Marathon was founded in 2010 with a clear vision: to create a world-class marathon event that promotes distance running while supporting social causes. The race has grown into the largest single-day sporting event in Gbarnga City. It attracts hundreds of runners, spectators and volunteers who come together in celebration of sporting unity, and community development.
The Gbarnga Marathon is particularly attractive to elite athletes and competitive runners because 90% of the route is flat and fast, offering excellent conditions for athletes pursuing personal best performances. Combined with favourable early-morning weather conditions, the race presents an opportunity for fast times and the unique experience of competing in one of Africa’s most welcoming running environments.
Beyond competition, the marathon remains deeply rooted in its charitable mission. Proceeds and partnerships from the event support community initiatives aimed at promoting health, youth engagement and social development. Through sport, the Gbarnga Marathon serves as a catalyst for positive change while strengthening Liberia’s emerging running culture.
The 2026 Gbarnga Marathon will take place at 06.30 on Saturday 30 May 2026. Athletes will run through streets filled with energy and enthusiasm, welcomed by cheerleaders, local residents and passionate spectators who encourage participants from start to finish. Gbarnga offers runners a unique atmosphere where community pride and athletic spirit meet.
The Gbarnga Marathon Foundation invites elite runners, amateur athletes, international teams, sponsors, and partners to join this growing event and become part of Liberia’s expanding presence on the global marathon stage.
