Hangzhou Marathon has been held annually since 1987 – a history of 32 years. It was originally known as the West Lake Osmanthus International Marathon and then as the Hangzhou International Friendship Marathon.

In 1999 the provincial and municipal governments jointly held the event and changed its name to “Zhejiang and Hangzhou International Marathon”. In 2006 it was renamed as “Hangzhou International Marathon” and in 2015 it officially became “Hangzhou Marathon”.

After years of dedicated efforts Hangzhou Marathon has been a full member of AIMS since 2007 and is an IAAF Silver Label Road Race and CAA Gold Medal Race. This makes the event one of the most important marathons in China. In 2018 Hangzhou Marathon established friendly and cooperative relations with Paris Marathon, Los Angeles Marathon, Hague Marathon and other internationally renowned marathons.

Hangzhou Marathon offers people the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery and tasty food of Hangzhou. The course is built around the world cultural heritage site of West Lake, which affords a most beautiful route. Recent urban transformation in Hangzhou has brought other facets to the race. The first section, with the West Lake scenic area as the core, passes through Hubin Road and Zhongshan Road and represents the history and culture of Hangzhou. The next part focuses on Qianjiang New City and exemplifies the modernisation of Hangzhou.

The third phase offers the most beautiful running conditions along Wentao Road as far as the G20 main venue and represents the future development of Hangzhou. Returning to the West Lake scenic area signals the marathon’s spirit of keeping going and never stopping. The course integrates the West Lake scenery, history and culture with the business district and modernisation, Qiantang River scenery and the marathon spirit to form the “world’s most beautiful course”.

In addition to the marathon a half marathon, a mini marathon, a “couples’ run” and a family run are part of the programme. There are 35,000 participants in total. In 2019 Hangzhou Marathon will continue to seek new breakthroughs in technology, wisdom, environmental protection and public welfare, build the top Internet and marathon event in China, constantly improve the standards of the event and create a race with runners at the core.

The catchphrase of the event is “Run Through Beautiful Scenery.” Featuring the concepts of “Recreation, Environment, Entertainment, Fashion and Health,” the Marathon demonstrates the natural and humanistic landscape of Hangzhou. We hope that the annual marathon tour brings you a joyful experience.
