Maratón de las Flores Medellín
Sun 17 September 2017
Medellín’s “Marathon of the Flowers” is the most important street sports event in the city. Now anticipating its 23rd edition it has been a pioneer in Colombia. More local, national and international runners come each year thanks to Medellin’s renoun as a top travel destination.
On balconies and terraces, in gardens, in parks and on sidewalk café tables, Medellín blooms all year. The weather is typically a pleasant 22–23°C no matter what the season. North-south breezes flow down from the surrounding mountains to help keep conditions cool.
The Marathon is recognized as an asset of the city: a means to generate tourism and employment and to cement the city’s reputation as a major centre of sport and culture bringing a positive image which helps to wipe away past conceptions.
Since the inaugural edition the event has been organised by MCM Operador de Eventos with the sponsorship of EPM — the city’s public utility company. It has enjoyed the support of both INDER Medellín — the city’s department of sports and recreation — and the Mayor’s Office. The entire city is committed to the Marathon and recognised as a force to promote healthy lifestyles and sustainability.
This year 15,000 national and foreign runners are expected. Normally the race receives about 4000 athletes from around the world along with nearly 40 elite international athletes for the full and half marathons. Last year’s winner Amos Kiprotich commented: “There was not so much humidity and I could run a good time.” It was his fastest performance of the year. Last year’s races — including the 10km and 5km distances — attracted a total of 12,728 runners from 30 countries worldwide.
After last year’s races Gustavo Orozco, general director of the Marathon, said “All runners praised the new courses and have given positive reviews of the races. We aim for the greater enjoyment of participants and their supporters.”
