Verona is a city of about 265,000 people in the north-east of Italy famous for its Roman architecture and artistic heritage. Three Shakespearean plays were set in the city. The 15th Verona marathon starts and finishes in in the city’s largest piazza, the Piazza Bra, in front of the Roman amphitheatre, the Arena. Completed around 30 AD, it is the third largest in Italy after Rome’s Colosseum and the arena at Capua.
Verona is the sixth largest marathon in Italy in terms of the number of finishers. Over
12,000 people are expected at the start line, to compete also in the third edition of the Half Marathon Cangrande and the “Last 10 km”. The range of events, starting at the same time in an emotional send-off, offers the chance for anyone and everyone to come to Verona to run. All the races are competitive and chip-timed.
The city is the ideal destination in which to spend a few days in Italy. You can visit the Arena, the home of Romeo & Juliet, the magnificent Piazza delle Erbe with the tall Torre dei Lamberti, the Piazza dei Signori and the the bridges of Verona — with the Ponte Pietra, the oldest of all, and the Scaligero Bridge that leads to Castelvecchio, the fortress of Verona.
In the immediate surroundings you can visit Lake Garda and the picturesque resorts of Sirmione, Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine.
Being only five weeks before Christmas a weekend at the Verona Marathon offers the opportunity to do some shopping for quality Italian products. Your time in Verona will be packed full with emotions, culture, good food and great wines.
