Tartu City Marathon
Sat 3 October 2015
The Tartu City Marathon started off in life as a 19.2km ‘City Run’ first held on 2 October 1983. In 2012 the race celebrated its 30th anniversary. No longer just a single race, Tartu offers a Marathon, a half marathon and a 10km ‘city run’ for both runners and Nordic walkers.
The marathon course is one of the most varied, interesting and beautiful in Estonia. Runners take a full tour of the university town during the event. The course passes through some of the most attractive and historical places in Tartu which is recognised as the intellectual capital of Estonia.
Tartu City Marathon is organized by the Club Tartu Maraton which has 55 years of experience in organising the biggest mass sport events in Estonia – among them one of the biggest events in Europe. The revamped Tartu City Marathon is the most recent Club Tartu Maraton event but its participant numbers are also the fastest growing.
Last year 2700 runners and Nordic walkers took part in the three events. This year more than 3500 participants are expected and the aim is to reach 10,000 participants in the coming years, in a town with a population of only 100,000.
