The Swedbank Tallinn Marathon is the largest running event in Estonia, taking place over three days in a truly special setting.
The races start and finish in Tallinn’s Old Town which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, making the event one of the rare marathons where runners begin and complete their race surrounded by centuries of preserved history.
Every September, thousands of runners from more than 90 countries gather in Estonia’s capital to experience this unique combination of sport, culture and city life.
Getting there is simple. Tallinn is well connected to major European cities, and Tallinn Airport — recently voted Europe’s Most Enjoyable Airport — is only about ten minutes from the city centre. Many runners stay right in the heart of Tallinn, within walking distance of the start and finish area. This makes race weekend relaxed and convenient: you can walk to the start, enjoy dinner in nearby restaurants and explore the city on foot.
The race begins beside Tall Hermann Tower, one of Estonia’s most important national symbols. Every morning at sunrise the Estonian flag is raised on this historic tower. During marathon weekend this place becomes the heart of the event — where thousands of runners start their journey and later return to celebrate their finish.
From the start the course takes runners on one scenic loop through Tallinn’s districts. You run past the UNESCO-listed Old Town, along promenades with views of the Baltic Sea and through green parks and modern city streets. The route is fast and comfortable — no cobblestones, just smooth roads and enjoyable running.
Many runners say it’s the scenery which surprises them the most.
“I was pleasantly surprised by how much nature there is in Tallinn. It was great to see the seaside and so many parks around the city.”
Others highlight the beauty of the city and the organisation of the race.
“A beautiful Old Town and a well-kept city, the perfect organisation of the event and an interesting route were my favorite parts of the Tallinn Marathon.”
The race is a World Athletics Label event, ensuring international standards and professional organisation. Distances are available for every level of runner, from the marathon and half marathon to the 10K and youth and children’s races.
But what many runners remember most is the atmosphere.
“The Tallinn half-marathon arrangements were superb. The weather and the local people cheering were great. It made me dream of living and working there.”
With cheering crowds, friendly volunteers and runners from around the world, finishing beneath Tall Hermann Tower feels like becoming part of Tallinn’s running story.
