On 10 December AIMS President Paco Borao and the President of the Hellenic Athletics Federations (SEGAS) Mr. Kostas Panagopoulos announced that SEGAS will be the major sponsor of AIMS for the next six years. This agreement reinforces the location of the AIMS Headquarters on Spyros Louis Avenue in Athens for the next six years.
Mr. Panagopoulos said “the cooperation of SEGAS with AIMS started eight years ago. The first result was a new symbol, that of the ‘marathon flame’, and a new institution, the annual AIMS Symposium, which brings together marathon organisers from all over the world every year in Athens. The Headquarters of AIMS has been established here and in recent years the AIMS Best Marathon Runner Awards Gala. All these activities promote the international image of Athens Marathon the Authentic and they promote Greece and its history and culture as the birthplace of the Marathon. When the company that was previously AIMS Patron could not continue this relationship, we decided to take over this role. SEGAS will be the major sponsor of AIMS for the next six years.”
Paco Borao said “on behalf of AIMS I would like to thank OPAP S.A for its three years of sponsorship which allowed AIMS to initiate its presence in Athens, and SEGAS for their support in allowing this to continue. I extend my thanks to the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Tourism, the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens OACA, and the Athens Marathon, the Authentic for their contribution to the success of this AIMS-SEGAS agreement. Birthplace of the Marathon and location of the inaugural Olympic Games, it is easy to understand why AIMS, dedicated to “fostering and promoting marathons and distance races throughout the world” could not have a more appropriate location for its headquarters than Athens. AIMS will make all efforts to project the image of Greece, its history, the magnificence of its monuments and culture, and the recognition of sporting values like peace, health, and solidarity.”
