AIMS Atlas Mountain Edition
Sat 15 February 2025
Ben Smim is a picturesque village nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains, near the city of Ifrane in Morocco.
Known for its fresh air, natural springs, and traditional Berber culture, the village provides a perfect backdrop for outdoor youth activities. Its elevation and landscape make it a unique location for running events, combining sport with nature and cultural heritage. An authentic mountain village with scenic trails and a strong community bond is an ideal setting for a safe and inspiring children’s running event.
The Ben Smim Running Club – a local sports club committed to inspiring children and youth through running, while connecting with culture, nature, and the community – plays a key role in local community development through sport, especially by involving children and schools in inclusive, health-oriented projects such as the AIMS Kids Running event.
800 children participated, divided into a 1000 metres race for ages 6–10 and a 1500m race for ages 11–14. 20% of the runners were girls, whose participation was actively promoted via schools and family outreach.
T-shirts and medals were awarded to all runners as a symbol of effort and participation. The top three boys and girls in each race took part in a podium ceremony.
The educational and cultural programme, in collaboration with schools, parents, and local organizations, featured workshops on health, environment, and sportsmanship, and the event was closed with cultural performances and storytelling.
This project shows how a village club can mobilise 800 children with sport, recognition, and vision and a focus on inclusion, girls’ participation, and community power.
