The Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Marathon presented by ASICS is Aotearoa New Zealand’s biggest and most iconic festival of running.

Established in 1992 the event has grown from just over 2500 runners to last year welcoming nearly 18,000 registered participants – the biggest field in its 33-year history.

The Auckland Marathon celebrates all that is great about New Zealand’s largest city, guiding runners through the city centre, along the waterfront and across the iconic Harbour Bridge. All athletes will complete their journey in Victoria Park, the Auckland Marathon’s vibrant finish line in the heart of the city.

The event offers runners and walkers five distances to suit all abilities – the 42.2km Marathon, 21.1km Half Marathon, 11km Traverse, 5km and a 2.2km Kids Run.

The marathon and half marathon start in Devonport, a picturesque suburb of Auckland’s North Shore known for its charming streets and stunning waterfront views. As you line up with thousands of fellow runners there’s a palpable sense of excitement and camaraderie. The starting gun fires and you’re off, your feet pounding the pavement as you make your way towards the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Crossing the Harbour Bridge on foot is a highlight of the race – a once-a-year opportunity afforded only to runners in the Auckland Marathon – with panoramic views of the Waitematā Harbour and the city skyline. The climb is challenging, but the reward is worth every step.

Descending into the city the course takes you through some of Auckland’s most iconic locations. You’ll pass by the bustling Viaduct Harbour and wind through the business district before running a scenic out and back along Tamaki Drive with the sparkling waters of the Hauraki Gulf alongside you. The final flourish takes you into Victoria Park, packed with supporters and spectators cheering you across the finish line.

Amidst the party, giving back to charity is an integral part of the Auckland Marathon. There are eight official charities aligned with the event this year and plenty more being supported by runners through their participation.
