Orlen Prague Marathon
Sun 4 May 2025
The ORLEN Prague Marathon record may be in serious danger this Sunday. A strong field of elite runners is preparing to challenge the standing race record of 2:05:09, set two years ago by Alexander Mutiso.
Among the top contenders are two Ethiopian stars, both with personal bests under 2:05.
Gadisa Birhanu ranks among the world’s most experienced road runners. He ran his first marathon back in 2014 in Houston, and the following year he already took victory on that same course. His winning time back then was approximately 2:13—marking the start of what would become a long and successful career. Like many endurance runners, Gadisa reached his peak after turning 30. Two years ago in Seville, he won with a 2:04:59 finish, earning not only a victory but also his current personal best.
Originally from the Wellega region of Ethiopia, Gadisa began running seriously in the sixth grade at his village school in Tulu Chali. After graduating from high school, he moved to the town of Nekemte and joined the local athletics club. His talent soon earned him a spot on a major Addis Ababa-based club. “That was a key moment for my development as an athlete,” Gadisa recalls. “Marathon running has given me many unforgettable stories. My path in both life and athletics has had its challenges, but through all the ups and downs, I’ve always felt the support of God.”
Among the elite men lining up for the 2025 ORLEN Prague Marathon, Abdualem Belay stands out with the fastest recent personal best—2:04:44—set at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, where he finished sixth at one of the sport’s most prestigious Majors. Throughout his career, Belay has claimed victories at eight marathons across three continents, including three wins in Lisbon. He made an immediate impact in his debut marathon season, winning in Castellón, Spain.
Belay celebrated his 33rd birthday on April 5th, the same day as the Generali Prague Half Marathon. He comes from a small village in the Gojjam region of northwestern Ethiopia and is one of seven siblings—two sisters and four brothers. “I love Ethiopian culture and our cuisine,” says Abdualem, whose favorite dish is injera, the traditional sour flatbread made from teff flour. In his free time, he enjoys reading stories, novels, and religious texts. “It’s my first time in Prague and the Czech Republic, and I’m looking forward to exploring the rich culture here after the race,” he adds.
Another strong Ethiopian to watch is Lemi Berhanu Hayle, the 2016 Boston Marathon champion, who returns to Prague aiming to defend his title. With a personal best of 2:04:33—set nine years ago in Dubai—he holds the fastest time among all athletes in this year’s field.
