First held in 2011 the marathon has grown exponentially over the years. Participation has soared from a modest 1250 runners in its inaugural year to nearly 26,000 in 2024. It has now become one of India’s largest marathons and has earned Label certification from World Athletics.

Held annually on the last weekend of August, the Hyderabad Marathon brings together people from all walks of life – irrespective of age, gender, race, or religion. It is all about fostering a sense of unity and encouraging an active lifestyle. The marathon’s philosophy focuses on the collective spirit of walking, jogging, and running, encouraging everyone to take steps toward better health and well-being.

The NMDC Hyderabad Marathon has always been about inclusivity. It’s not a race to find the fastest runner – the true goal is to create winners out of everyone who crosses the starting line. Over the years it has successfully raised more than 45 million rupees (478,000 EUR), benefiting not-for-profit organisations across the city. For its 13th edition in 2024 the NMDC Hyderabad Marathon was awarded the World Athletics Label, making it an officially recognised event by the global athletics community. Elite runners from across the world are invited, cementing the status of the marathon as an international event. The HRS has applied for the 2025 World Athletics Label to ensure that the marathon will continue to grow and attract elite athletes from all over the world.
