A priceless experience

The sun shines over the city and people are getting ready to run, cheer or volunteer for one of the greatest sporting events of the city: the Zurich Rock’n’Roll Running Series Madrid.

The dreams and goals of more than 40,000 runners are more than ready. They’ve been waiting for months… or even years.

In their homes, hotels, or at a friend’s house, alarms are ringing as the final hour is approaching. Some of them start at 08.00 with the 10km and some others – with longer distances – will have to wait another hour to finally start their celebration.

The city is full of runners who fuel with a proper breakfast. They are all sharing the same secret ingredient: their desire for running. They are already dressed up in all their gear: their chosen running shoes, shorts, the official race t-shirt that claims ‘MADRID’ and of course their bib number, which they proudly wear on top of everything else.

At 08.00 there is the gunshot: the party has begun. The city is awake earlier than on any other Sunday as the first runners hit the pavement. They take on a course of 10km that tours one of the most amazing city centres in the world.

At 09.00 there is another gunshot: 21km and 42km runners start their long countdown to their finish line. Kilometre by kilometre, rock bands play their songs and people cheer the runners; the city is alive more than on any other day. The streets are closed for cars, buses, transit but open for those who decided to accept the big challenge that is the Spanish capital: hilly only as its avenues and streets, beautiful like no other city, monumental like its history and as warming as its people.

As rock classics play in the background runners start to reach the finish line. Glorious, like adventurers returning home with treasures from distant lands. They hug, they kiss, they celebrate. Their priceless smiles are captured in photographs. They grab their medal, that symbolizes not only the accomplishment of finishing the race but the months of training, early mornings, sacrifice, discipline and self-love.

There is no better way to honour all the effort they have made… and there is no better way to feel Madrid.
