The New Delhi winter provides ideal weather for what this year will be the 10th edition of this prestigious race, flagged off in India’s capital city. The title event attracts thousands of participants including professional athletes, serious runners and fitness enthusiasts from across the nation and beyond.
Paying tribute to each runner’s strength of mind and celebrating the vibrant spirit of the city, 30,000 runners will assemble at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium early on the morning of Sunday 23 November. Runners can participate in categories that include the Half Marathon (21.097km) that occupies pride of place, the Great Delhi Run (6km), Senior Citizens’ Run (4km), the DHL Corporate Champions (21.097km) and the Champions with Disability (4km) Event.
The route offers runners a beautiful glimpse of the historic city, passing the most prominent landmarks of New Delhi. Runners approach the Parliament House along the majestic Rajpath, running east-west from India Gate to the famous Lutyens Government Secretariat buildings. After the turnaround they retrace the route towards the stadium, skirting Delhi Golf Club and enjoying the fast final kilometres along leafy Lodhi Road.
Charity is at the heart of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. Organizations and individuals championing causes ranging from child welfare and better education to women’s empowerment and environmental protection spread the word and raise funds through the USD 210,000 prize money event.
Each year the promoter, Procam International, invites one of the world’s most accomplished sporting stars to raise the profile of distance running as a sport. Previous event ambassadors include Donovan Bailey, Richard Hadlee, Allan Border, Jackie-Joyner Kersee, Daley Thompson, Cathy Freeman and David Rudisha.
Course records stand to Atsedu Tsegay and Mary Keitany with 59:12 and 1:06:54, set in 2013 and 2009 respectively.
