On Sunday 27 October 2024 Dublin will host the 43rd edition of one of the great European city marathons.

The event is highly anticipated and runs through the city’s historical Georgian streets and the picturesque Phoenix Park. Thousands of spectators will line the route, creating a friendly and lively atmosphere that overseas participants have come to love and has earned the race its nickname as the ‘Friendly Marathon’.

The Irish Life Dublin Marathon is a must-see event for runners worldwide; it offers a unique and memorable experience. The 26.2-mile route takes runners through Dublin’s most iconic landmarks and neighbourhoods, including Trinity College, Dublin Castle, and Phoenix Park. The course is designed to showcase the best of the city, providing runners with a blend of urban scenery, historic sites, and green spaces.

The race starts and finishes in the city centre, with a scenic tour in between. The course is relatively flat, with some inclines and declines, making it suitable for both novice and seasoned runners. Water and aid stations are placed throughout the route to ensure runners remain hydrated and energised.

The atmosphere is electric and there is a strong camaraderie among runners. Many share their stories, offer encouragement and support each other throughout the race.

Aside from the unforgettable experience of running through the city, the Dublin Marathon also offers a range of practical advantages. The Irish climate is favourable for marathon running, with average temperatures around 12–14°C (53–57°F) in October and about 30 inches (75cm) of rain annually. Pacers are provided to help runners achieve their ambitions by targeting finish times at 10-minute intervals. All finishers receive a technical long sleeve t-shirt and a special medal as a token of their achievement.

In the days just before the marathon runners attend the Dublin Marathon Expo held at the Royal Dublin Society and easily accessible from the city centre. Participants collect their race number and pre-race goodie bag and browse through the many running stalls.

So why not come and experience the occasion for yourself? The Dublin Marathon promises a warm and friendly welcome and once you’ve tried it you’ll want to come back again and again.
