Walls Linker Oevert Half Marathon
Sun 15 September 2024
On Sunday 15 September the 10th edition of the Walls Linker Oevert Half Marathon will take place. For this celebratory edition the course has been revamped to fully cover Antwerp’s territory. The route meanders along the outskirts of the Belgian metropolis – home to half a million residents and renowned for its diamond industry, fashion scene, rich history and vibrant culture.
The Walls Linker Oevert Half Marathon showcases the very best of Antwerp. Participants can take in beautiful views of Antwerp’s iconic skyline, dominated by landmarks such as the imposing Antwerp Cathedral. But the race isn’t just about urban scenery; it offers a diverse and picturesque route that explores serene green spaces. One of the highlights of the course is to run alongside the Scheldt River, a vital waterway that has played a central role in Antwerp’s history and development. Runners will also pass by Galgenweel, a stunning semi-natural lake that provides a tranquil backdrop for the race.
Let’s not forget the sandy shores of Sint-Anneke Beach. There is a song dedicated to it: “It’s close to home, and I never get bored. There’s nothing that compares to Sint-Anneke Beach,” say the lyrics. Due to the presence of this short strip of sand the course is ‘only’ 95% paved, adding an extra challenge and distinction to the race.
Apart from the course through the 101-year-old Linkeroever, the presence of selected pacers is an advantage. They help to shield runners from the wind and guide them seamlessly to a new personal best time. The atmosphere is also special. Just before the finish line a group of Japanese drummers give runners that final impetus to sprint to the finish line where a red carpet awaits. Participants proceed to a tent where their supporters can greet them. Every runner receives a medal at the finish.
In addition to the thrill of competition and the joy of personal achievement, the Walls Linker Oevert Half Marathon also offers participants the opportunity to give back to the community. Through partnerships with local charities and organisations, the event strives to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. This further reinforces the race’s status as a beacon of hope and inspiration within the community.
Last year 1000 participants gathered at the start in Linkeroever. Although runners are predominantly from Belgium, interest in this Antwerp running classic extends far beyond national borders, with participants coming from various European countries, South America, and North America. From seasoned veterans to first-time runners, participants of all ages and abilities unite in their shared passion for running and their love of Antwerp. The fastest of them completed the 21km in 1:10:49. The fastest woman crossed the finish line with a time of 1:30:27. Podium prizes are awarded for the top three men and women.
Mark your calendars, lace up your shoes, and join us on 15 September for an unforgettable journey through the heart of Antwerp.
