Maratón Internacional de Mendoza
Sun 28 April 2024
The Mendoza International Marathon (MIM) is the oldest event in the Province of Mendoza and one of the main races in the country. The forthcoming 24th edition will again attract record numbers of competitors in the four distances of 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km and 4km.
More than 10,000 runners will participate, The distinctive feature of the event is that it consists of four starts in different parts of Mendoza and a common finish, in the heart of the General San Martín Park. Without a doubt the MIM is one of the races with the most attractive scenery on the marathon circuit: mountains, rivers, vineyards and an impressive finish at the majestic gates of the General San Martin Park, designed by the French architect Carlos Thays.
The MIM has again been declared an Event of National Interest by the Presidency of the Nation for promoting sport, culture and tourism and the considerable economic impact it has in the country and in the Province of Mendoza. In addition to this distinction are those bestowed at the provincial level by the Honourable Chamber of Deputies of Mendoza.
For the fourth year the best Mendoza residents will be awarded at the Marathon distance, in honour of Cristian Malgioglio, the first runner who conquered this challenge. There is a bonus for the runner who manages to lower the course records which are currently held by José Luis Luna with 2:19 (since 2006) and Adela Barrios with 2:47 for women (since 2019).
One of the objectives of the Mendoza Marathon organisers, the Fundación Filipides, is to stimulate the world of running to promote the development and growth of athletics and in this way train ambassadors of Argentine sport and culture to project themselves in the world. For this reason there will be monetary recognition for athletes at all distances.
In the 2023 edition runners came to compete from all over the world: Uruguay, Peru, Holland, China, Uruguay, Canada, Australia, Poland, Germany, Paraguay, Russia, Denmark, United States, Mexico, Germany among others including large numbers from Chile and Brazil.
Runners travel to take part from all the provinces of the Argentine Republic and there are the people from Mendoza itself who year after year make the MIM a true sports festival.
Like the great marathons of the world, the MIM tours some important attractions. From the start at the Suspension Bridge in the foothills of the Andes, the course passes through the town of Cacheuta, continuing along the main route with the typical arid landscape before reaching the vineyard areas of Luján de Cuyo and Godoy Cruz before ending at the gates of the General San Martín Park in the heart of Mendoza.
The Filipides Foundation, organiser of this event, has forged various alliances this year with the aim of encouraging the practice of sport and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle on the one hand, and collaboration for humanitarian and environmental causes on the other.
Beyond the Marathon, the province of Mendoza is recognised worldwide because it is the heart of the Argentine wine region, famous for its Malbecs and other red wines. Its different wineries offer tastings and guided tours. The city has wide, leafy streets surrounded by modern and art deco buildings. Smaller squares surround the Plaza Independencia, site of the underground Municipal Museum of Modern Art.
