RheinEnergieMarathon Cologne
Sun 13 October 2013
It all starts with the half marathon in Cologne-Deutz. Approximately 15,000 runners will kick off at 08.30 to begin their tour of all the most beautiful parts of the city At 10.00 the marathon will follow – much earlier than last year’s starting time of 11.30 – and approximately 8,000 participants will face the full 42.195km distance. The course is equally appealing to an ambitious runner, diligently pursuing a new personal best time, or a recreational runner who has an eye for the sights of the city and wants to enjoy the great atmosphere. It offers both opportunities: fast times and a scenic tour showing traditional and progressive Cologne. After the start the runners cross Deutzer bridge, from which there is a great panoramic view of Cologne’s skyline, before heading on Rheinuferstraße towards Rheinauhafen. Here you will find the recently completed crane houses whose modern architecture contrasts with former harbour buildings. At Bismarck column the course turns towards the city centre and the central point of the race – Rudolfplatz, with its thousands of spectators. From here participants run in a star-shape configuration, passing through typical Cologne districts with their monuments and medieval churches. They will again return to this special highlight before starting on the final few kilometres for an emotional finish at the city’s main landmark: Cologne Cathedral. A dignified ending to a perfect day. In addition to the marathon and half marathon you may participate in the relay team marathon (four runners over 42.2 kilometres). Register prior to 28 August 2014 at: www.cologne-marathon.com.
