Since the first edition in 2007 the SwissCityMarathon has been held on the last Sunday in October. The two-lap course starts and finishes at the Swiss Museum of Transport beside the lake in the centre of Lucerne.

From the start the course passes in front of the city’s traditional luxury hotels and beside the Hofkirche. With a great view of the Chapel Bridge and the water tower (dating from the 13th century and one of the most photographed buildings in Europe) you pass by the Culture and Congress Centre Lucerne on the other side of the lake. The route continues around the Horw peninsula with a view of the imposing mountain panorama of Central Switzerland that stretches along Lake Lucerne. The course then leads past the modern football stadium, home of FC Lucerne, before coming back to the city and through the heart of the Culture and Congress Centre Lucerne (KKL) and into the picturesque old town to finish back at the Swiss Museum of Transport.

Runners can opt for the marathon, half-marathon or 10km distance. About 40 pacemakers will support you in achieving your target time over the marathon or half marathon. Or you can sign up for the non-ranked category if you want to run without the pressure of competition. For children between 4-6 years old the Maratholino (195m), either in Lucerne or in Horw, offers a first experience of running.

At the SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne everyone is a winner no matter how long it takes you to reach the finish line. Around 30 music formations – from the carnival band to the classic Jazz group or traditional “Trychler” – support your run in Lucerne. Over 40,000 spectators line the course and applaud the runners. The half-marathon, with 7000 participants, is Switzerland’s biggest.

Thanks to the Swiss-Runners Ticket included in the registration fee all participants can take free public transport from the Swiss border to Lucerne and back again. You can arrive before the marathon weekend and stay some days after so that you have enough time to discover the city and the Swiss Central Region. The SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne gives you the chance to get to the starting line using a free shuttle boat service for runners and spectators between the main railway station and the start and finish area.

The race entry fee includes not only the SwissRunners-Ticket but, for marathon and half marathon runners, a nice finisher shirt and for 10km runners a special finisher gift. And don’t forget the well-deserved beer waiting for you in the finish area. When you pick up your race number the day before the race at the marathon Expo you will get a voucher to enjoy some delicious pasta or Rösti in the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern. All marathon finishers receive a medal.
