7 FEBRUARY 2015: KAGAWA-MARUGAME HALF MARATHON, JAPAN

Eleven runners, including eventual winner Goitom Kifle, Kenya's Dominic Nyairo, Tanzania's Fabiano Sulle and Japan's Keijiro Mogi reached 10km in 28:50 writes Ken Nakamura. By 15km (43:05) four remained: Kifle, Sulle, Nyairo and Mogi. Sulle gradually fell off the pace and at 20km Kifle led Mogi and Nyairo by four seconds. The Eritrean held on for the win by just one second ahead of Nyairo. Technically speaking, 18-year-old Nyairo was making his half-marathon debut but the Japan-based Kenyan ran the 23.1km stage at last month's Hakone Ekiden in 1:07:20 (1:01:30 half marathon pace). Mogi's best had been a modest 1:03:11 but the 20-year-old reduced that to 1:00:54 to move to sixth on the Japanese all-time list.

World marathon bronze medallist Eunice Kirwa ran aggressively in the women's race, reaching 10km in 31:51 at which point she led over Diane Nukuri by 32 seconds and was on course-record pace. With no one to push her Kirwa could not maintain her momentum but finished with a 400m winning margin and a personal best time. Despite setting a PB and running more than a minute quicker than her winning time from last year Eloise Wellings' performance placed her only third.

12 FEBRUARY 2016: RAS AL KHAIMAH HALF MARATHON, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Cynthia Limo moved up to third on the world all-time list for the half marathon, behind Florence Kiplagat and Mary Keitany, with this victory writes Rob Walker. She was to the fore throughout: within a group of seven up to 15km (passing 10km in 31:32) which reduced to just her and world Half Marathon champion Gladys Cherono by 20km (1:02:48). Limo broke away over the last 800m to claim a narrow but confident win.

Of the first six finishers — all under 67 minutes — five set personal bests with Limo taking 37 seconds off her time and Cherono 31 seconds off hers with the dubious bonus of posting the fastest ever non-winning performance. Genet Yalew set an Ethiopian record in third having lost contact with the two Kenyans around 19km.

The men's pace was sluggish by comparison until the final kilometre when in a thrilling finish four athletes raced to the line within a single second of each other. Birhanu Legese once again proved his finishing power by just holding off Kenya's Stanley Biwott with both on the same time. A large group had gone through 10km in 29.11 and eight runners were together at 15km (43:28); seven of them remained at the start of the finishing sprint.

21 FEBRUARY 2016: ZURICH MARATON DE SEVILLA, SPAIN

Kenya's Cosmas Kiplimo Lagat regained the Zurich Maraton de Sevilla title he won on his marathon debut in 2014, improving his own course record by 19 seconds writes Emeterio Valiente. In 12–13°C and a very slight breeze a tio of pacemeakers ensure that the course record wasw under threwat from the start. Nine runners passed halfway in 1:03:36 but over the next 9km the lead group started to disintegrate. By 30km only Kiplimo Lagat along with his compatriots Shedreck Kiptoo Kimaiyo and Geoffrey Koech — who were later to finish 11th and drop out just after 35km respectively — remained together at the front. Just before 34km Kiplimo Lagat quickly established a big lead, never to be headed. He passed 40km in 2:01:30 with a sub-2:08 time still likely but was clearly flagging over the final 2km and had to settle for a course record and a personal best.

Spain's 37-year old international Carles Castillejo came through strongly over the final 7km, having been 10th at 35km and fourth at 40km, to claim the Spanish national title and guarantee a place on Spain's Rio 2016 Olympic Games team.

Paula Gonzalez won her debut marathon just ahead of Morocco's Koutar Boulaid. A group of African athletes set the early pace Miriam Wangari, Rael Jepyator and Eunice Jeptoo, plus Ethiopia's Roman Mengistu, went through halfway in 1:14:15 with Gonzalez and Boulaid over a minute in arrears. Jeptoo broke away from her three rivals at the front shortly before 30km (1:45:45) with Gonzalez and Boulaid almost two minutes adrift. But the pair ran Jeptoo down Jeptoo from 31–37km — Gonzalez with a modest lead over Boulaid which she kept to the end.

28 FEBRUARY 2016: TOKYO MARATHON, JAPAN

Helah Kiprop set a new course record of 2:21:27 after passing through halfway in 1:10:41 writes Ken Nakamura. The lead group then ran a 16:34 5km split — the fastest of the race — and reached 30km in 1:40:26. At 35km (1:57:08) Kiprop had compatriot Edna Kiplagat and the Ethiopian pair of Amane Gobena and Aberu Kebede for company. But Kiprop steadily surged away covering the next 5km in 16:39 while the others all took over 17 minutes. She took almost a minute off the record set by Ethiopia's Tirfe Tsegaye two years ago and improved her best by over two minutes.

Feyisa Lelisa won his first victory since Xiamen in 2010. He kicked away from last year's winner Dickson Chumba in the final kilometre but Bernard Kipyego overtook Chumba in the final few metres for second spot. The main pack went through 10km in 29:37 but then slowed slightly to pass halfway in 1:02:52. After nine runners passed 30km in 1:29:49 Chumba made his move and Lelisa went with him. They led by 37 seconds at 35km and 53 seconds at 40km — but then Chumba began to slow dramatically and Feyisa had an untroubled win.

Yuki Takamiya's eighth place, with an improvement in his personal best by nearly five minutes, came as a surprise even to himself.

28 FEBRUARY 2016: WORLD'S BEST 10km, PUERTO RICO

Bedan Karoki and Mary Wacera warmed up for the World Half Marathon in March with narrow wins that repeated their successes in 2014 writes Javier Clavelo Robinson. It was the first time the race had been held in the morning rather than the usual late afternoon start. The men went through 5km in 13:55. Karoki always featured in the lead group as it began to shrink over the final 3km. Three remained in contention with a kilometre to go: Karoki, Leonard Barsoton and 2015 world leader Stephen Sambu. Barsoton made his effort with 500m to go but Karoki found an extra gear in the sprint finish to overtake him and prevail in a photo finish. Both were men were timed 27:42, the fastest time in the race for five years.

In the women's race Ethiopia's defending champion Belaynesh Oljira formed part of a nine-woman group that passed 3km in 9:12. As the race progressed the lead group shrank to six women and it was only in the last 500m that Wacera found an extra gear to secure victory. Beverley Ramos set a national record for Puerto Rico in tenth place.
